#PinkTutuRome - Wednesday 2022-01-26 - "Rome's A Sight For Sore Eyes, And My Sore Feet!"
Well, hello there, darlings! It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another #PinkTutuRome post! 🎀 🇮🇹 This week, we're venturing deeper into the Eternal City – the most stunning, romantic place I've ever been! It’s been a whirlwind of ancient history, delicious food, and… naturally, even more, pink tutus than usual!
It feels so good to be back blogging after my absolutely incredible weekend dancing with the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House. (Let’s just say I'm a little bit sore today, but I'd be lying if I said my legs aren’t a little bit thrilled at how strong they feel – and who could say no to the chance to work on their pirouettes amongst some of the world's best ballet dancers, even if it meant going through hours of grueling rehearsal sessions?) Being back in Derbyshire just wasn't the same without my precious pink tutu. So, I’m off on another exciting adventure to fill the #PinkTutu blog with even more fun.
Speaking of adventures, this week’s #PinkTutuRome adventure involved exploring the Roman Forum and the Colosseum – two of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. As always, I ensured I looked every bit the graceful ballerina as I took in all of the historical beauty (think pink tutu, obviously, with a simple white tee, oversized shades, and my faithful canvas tote bag, packed with my camera, some travel snacks, and, of course, my emergency ballet shoes!). It's a combination of practical yet glam that makes this ballerina always ready to conquer the world, or, well, Rome in this case! It may look like a strange combination – but trust me, you can’t truly travel anywhere unless you’ve got a trusty pair of ballet shoes on standby. Who knows when an impromptu plié or pirouette is required? 😉
Honestly, I've always been a sucker for history and architecture – and I couldn’t believe I'd only just experienced a small part of what the forum has to offer. It was like walking back in time, surrounded by remnants of a lost empire, imagining the vibrant bustling city it once was! Every archway, every crumbled column whispered tales of a powerful era gone by. The Colosseum was equally impressive. A giant stadium used to entertain the crowds with games and gladiators centuries ago – an absolute architectural marvel that truly showed the ambition of the Roman Empire.
But what would any trip to Rome be without a little gelato? The gelato here is the best in the world – light, creamy, and bursting with flavour! I’d have to say, it was my reward for completing the ‘Colosseum Tour in a Pink Tutu’. (Yes, I made that up. No, I don’t need validation. And Yes, you should definitely try it yourself!) It was divine! Of course, all this sightseeing does make a girl a little bit tired, and who else but your beloved Pink Tutu girl would choose a fun, vintage-style Roman chariot ride for a much-needed nap? It might not have been a comfortable place to relax and recharge, but with my beautiful tutu on, what other option could I have considered?
Later that day, my itinerary called for a visit to Piazza Navona – another one of Rome's incredible piazzas filled with statues, fountains, and street performers, and, surprise surprise, even more pink! I know what you're thinking – 'more pink?!' You’d be right. The square itself had quite a pink vibe – even the fountain had touches of soft pinks running through it – and for someone who wears a pink tutu to Rome, there is no such thing as too much pink!
In fact, I'm quite a fan of taking photos in a pink tutu against anything pink I see in my travels – because I believe in celebrating the little things – that makes everything extra special – the whole point of the Pink Tutu world after all! Just as the afternoon drew to a close, I also saw an interesting pop-up exhibition, celebrating Italian street performers – all of their colourful costumes really brought back that "theatre meets street performance" spirit which was something I really loved as a dancer in Derbyshire! I snapped some photos – all featuring a whole lot of pink (because you know how much I love a good #PinkTutu pose!) and some vibrant, fun designs that really caught my eye.
Talking of street performers, I happened to be lucky enough to witness a truly breathtaking live theatre performance later that evening. It was set in one of the many old beautiful, classical theatres here. There was something special about the performance, especially as it drew heavily on Ballet traditions. This really took me back to the elegance of the classic and timeless.
Of course, with a show as special as this, I wore a new pink tutu, this one with some little sequins to give it an extra glam touch – which just about fit the vibe of the theatre I had chosen. The setting itself was an absolute dream – adorned with twinkling lights and plush velvet seats. (Honestly, you can see the whole 'dress-to-impress' feeling there. Who wouldn't love to have their first pink tutu dance right here in a Roman Theatre? I certainly loved mine!) The story, and the way it used all the classical movements, captivated me - and so, in a nod to 'real' ballerina traditions (which include the ‘final bow’) I bowed a bit at the end of the performance! I even got a huge round of applause – it really made me realise just how much my dance journey has taken me so far!
Well, dear readers, Rome truly is a place to indulge in all that life has to offer – art, food, architecture – and, of course, pink! My days were packed with endless sights, vibrant performances, and exciting discoveries, leaving me truly enthralled by the magic of the city. I hope I’ve inspired you to discover your own version of pink joy – with a bit of travelling, a little bit of ballet, and even a sprinkle of pink! I can't wait to explore more of the city in the coming weeks!
Until next Wednesday! 👋
