Ciao bellas! ?
Welcome back to Pink Tutu, where we're taking our love for pink tutus on a whirlwind adventure around the globe! Today, we're in the Eternal City, Rome, Italy. If you're new here, I'm Emma, a twenty-something ballerina from the beautiful Peak District in Derbyshire. I love a good tutu twirl, ballet classes, exploring new places, and spreading a little bit of pink wherever I go.
I’ve got a bit of a thing about tutus and it started a while ago when I discovered that I absolutely adored ballet! It's not just the graceful movements, the beautiful costumes, the amazing music; it's the feeling of utter freedom that comes with swirling across the stage in a soft pink tutu, feeling the music thrumming through my entire body. Honestly, wearing pink tutus really helps you let loose, which is exactly why I’ve adopted them as my go-to attire for travelling. Pink is my favourite colour and it never fails to attract a smile or a compliment from people wherever I go. Who doesn't love a little bit of pink?!
Now, let's talk about my adventures in Rome. I arrived yesterday after a smooth and very comfortable journey from Vienna by train - I have to admit, I much prefer train travel to flights. You get to enjoy the journey so much more, taking in the landscapes, the passing towns and the delightful little cafés that pop up along the route. Oh, and I never fail to attract attention in my vibrant pink tutu and sparkly ballet shoes - it's a recipe for a conversation starter on the train, I assure you!
Day 1 in Rome: The Colosseum and a Romantic Dinner
Rome has a palpable magic, a captivating energy that sweeps you away the minute you arrive. First stop was the Colosseum, which felt like stepping back into ancient history. Imagine gladiators fighting to the death and emperors roaring at the crowds, the echo of their voices bouncing around the majestic arena! There's such a powerful energy in this historical monument that it left me feeling speechless for a moment. But who can blame me? You can't help but be impressed by such ancient grandeur!
The highlight of my day, though, was a delicious and romantic dinner with a delicious glass of Italian red wine on the rooftop terrace of a beautiful hotel near the Piazza Navona. It felt so idyllic, gazing across the lit cityscape with my wine in hand - a perfect end to a day exploring ancient history.
Day 2: Fashion & Ballet Bliss
Now, you all know I have a bit of a weakness for a good shopping spree, and Rome certainly didn't disappoint! I discovered a charming vintage shop filled with chic retro pieces, perfect for my dance-inspired style. Let's just say that I picked up a few things - and let’s be honest, you can't visit Rome without adding a touch of vintage style to your wardrobe. I even found an old Italian ballet book - such a treasure!
Then, it was onto an evening performance at the Teatro dell'Opera. The sheer beauty of the Opera House left me breathless! The performances were mesmerizing - I always get so caught up in the stories, the drama and the sheer artistry on stage! Of course, no performance could ever live up to the sheer magic of twirling under the stage lights, but let's face it, seeing the professionals grace the stage never fails to inspire. I think my heart danced as much as the performers!
Day 3: Food & Culture Galore
I woke up this morning with a newfound appreciation for Italian breakfast. They do it so differently here – more leisurely and less rushed than I'm used to at home. And the pastries? Oh, my goodness, they were so light, airy and simply delicious. It’s going to be hard to resist them every day!
Afterwards, I ventured into the charming cobblestone alleys of the Trastevere district, feeling like I had been transported into a classic movie. The narrow streets are lined with cafes, small boutiques, and charming trattorias offering traditional Italian cuisine. I stopped for lunch at one of these little trattorias and indulged in a delectable spaghetti alle vongole (with fresh clams!). It was a true culinary experience that had me reminiscing about Italian cinema scenes. I have to confess I've started watching some of the old classics since coming to Italy – something about these vintage films captures the charm of Italy. I've discovered a love for Fellini's movies and a new appreciation for classic cinema!
Later in the afternoon, I strolled through the stunning Villa Borghese, one of the largest parks in Rome, enjoying the sights of fountains and sculpture gardens, and marveling at the impressive Galleria Borghese. You know me - I love art. I can’t get enough of exploring the work of talented artists and watching the interplay of light and shadow in their paintings, the colours, the sheer skill!
Day 4: A Little Roman Holiday (In Pink Tutu Style)
This morning, I indulged in the true essence of "La dolce vita" by joining a yoga class held at the edge of the Roman Forum. As I stretched and flowed with the gentle breeze carrying the scent of citrus and jasmine through the air, it felt like I was truly connected with the spirit of ancient Rome. What an amazing experience - feeling connected to the historical significance of the place!
Later in the day, I donned my most comfortable pink tutu and twirled my way through the iconic Piazza di Spagna. It was here that I decided to spread a bit of pink love and encourage everyone I saw to do the same. We have such a strong need to be taken seriously in the modern world that sometimes we forget that letting loose and having some fun can make our lives so much brighter. So, yes, I asked a few of the locals to twirl with me, and honestly, they were the happiest bunch. We had a proper chuckle and it truly did feel like I’d brought some sunshine into their day. And isn’t that exactly what we need to do more of in this world – share joy and encourage some lightness wherever we go?
Day 5: A Visit to the Vatican City
It's hard to comprehend the size and splendor of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. It felt as if I'd entered another world! The beauty, the history, the intricately detailed architecture, it left me breathless. Then I explored the Vatican Museum, with its rich art collections, tapestries and captivating halls – there is a truly mind-blowing abundance of historical and artistic treasures in this place!
But for me, the highlight of my visit was a quiet moment of reflection in the gardens. They’re serene and peaceful and allow you to absorb the tranquility of this beautiful space and appreciate its significance for the city and for its followers. There's a sense of peace and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of Rome.
*Day 6: A Fond Farewell (and Pink Tutu Inspiration) *
It's bittersweet to say goodbye to Rome. It feels as if I've lived a lifetime in a few short days. The city left a mark on me, not only because of the historical richness but also the beautiful spirit of the people, their genuine warmth and love of life, their passion for art and food, their generosity of spirit. And, of course, the amazing gelato! You know what? I'm going to indulge in another scoop before leaving tomorrow.
I have a new-found love for the pink and the pink-inspired look. It really is such a universal symbol of positivity and joy. So, why not embrace the pink? It's my motto. Go forth, spread the pink and dance with abandon wherever you may go.
If you are considering visiting Rome, do it! Immerse yourself in the beauty and the history and the incredible energy that Rome has to offer. It’s a destination to embrace for its beauty, its food and its art, its ancient history, and most importantly, its joy.
Stay tuned for next week’s post where we'll be exploring the charming streets of Seville in Spain. Until then, remember to dance, spread the love and keep twirling! ? ?
Love and pink tutus,
Emma xx
