Slough: Tutu Tales & Train Tracks - Post #818
Hello, darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed blogger, Emma, checking in from the delightful, if slightly unassuming, town of Slough! Now, I know what you're thinking, "Emma, Slough?! Seriously?" But hear me out, because this trip was anything but ordinary, full of surprising discoveries, fabulous train journeys, and of course, a sprinkle of pink tutu magic.
Today's adventure began with the most exciting, glamorous, and absolutely essential mode of transport – a train journey! Let's face it, there's just something wonderfully romantic about hurtling through the English countryside, the scenery whizzing past, feeling like a ballerina gracefully gliding across the landscape. This trip was particularly charming because it was the iconic, scarlet, vintage-looking, steam train service. I'm absolutely convinced they hired a designer for the seating - so incredibly plush and stylish, fit for a tutu-wearing queen like myself.
Speaking of tutus, today I was channeling my inner "Swans Lake" with a gloriously voluminous, pastel purple tutu that, let's just say, perfectly complimented the afternoon's slightly more earthy tones. It even made my journey across Slough station's underpass a grand ballet. Who knew the echoing sound of the train and the echoing "clonk, clonk" of my ballerina shoes would make such an epic performance? 😉
After the invigorating journey, my main reason for journeying to Slough revealed itself - a chance encounter! While I can’t tell you what it is, because some secrets deserve to stay private, it involved dancing, it involved glamour, it involved my passion for all things ballet, it involved my inner 'ballerina', it involved laughter and, of course, a touch of magic. All of which you’ll just have to wait for a future blog post to unravel.
What could be better than an afternoon filled with unexpected joy and an intriguing ballet-themed encounter? You guessed it – dinner! After my delightful journey, I found myself strolling through the centre of Slough and stumbling upon the most quaint little bistro, radiating cosy, inviting warmth. They had a delightful "Steak Au Poivre" dish – with its black peppercorn sauce, oh it was exquisite. Of course, no Emma dinner is complete without a strawberry sorbet for dessert. (I like to live on the edge, darlings). It’s an irresistible balance of classic sophistication and playful sweet-tooth. After all, wouldn’t it be rude to miss the chance to have the prettiest dessert? Pink, of course, went perfectly with my purple tutu, too! 😉
The best part? Slough town itself proved to be surprisingly charming. Even amongst the grey concrete buildings and business blocks, a touch of floral beauty popped through, and I discovered some truly charming hidden gems. Like that lovely cafe tucked away on the high street, selling a delightful mix of artisan bakery goodies and vintage china. Just the kind of shop that makes you want to indulge your inner collector. You might think that the most iconic element of Slough was the 'I love Slough' slogan in huge lettering - not really - it was this beautiful old town clock. They do have stunning public art – some of which featured brightly coloured flowers. I’m talking beautiful flower-inspired murals! Oh, you can take the girl out of Derbyshire, but you can’t take the country girl out of her love of wildflowers and anything nature.
As the evening unfolded, I couldn't resist stopping for one final indulgence. A treat from the little gelato shop nestled into one of Slough's little backstreets. Their 'Pistachio with Rose' flavour was an absolute dream! Not only was it divine but it perfectly tied together the elegance of the vintage train journey with the floral and enchanting discoveries I made in Slough.
As I journeyed back to Derbyshire on a night train, watching the twinkling countryside illuminated by the full moon, it struck me that even the most unexpected destination can bring beauty, wonder, and even a little bit of magic to a tutu-wearing ballet fanatic's day!
Slough, you surprised me! You’ve captured a place in my tutu-wearing heart.
So, darlings, if you’re ever looking for a fun adventure that takes you off the beaten track, why not give Slough a try? And who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired by the town’s charming spirit to don a pink tutu, grab a ticket on a steam train and experience the unexpected magic of ballet in the most surprising of places.
Keep sparkling, my dearest readers, until tomorrow!
