Small Heath - Where Ballet Meets the Wild

Good morning, darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-loving ballet enthusiast, Emma, here, bringing you a splash of sunshine from the heart of Birmingham, specifically the lovely, leafy neighbourhood of Small Heath.

Let’s rewind the clock a little. After a fabulously decadent afternoon at the theatre watching the Bolshoi Ballet, I decided a change of scene was just what the doctor ordered. Now, usually I’d be hopping on a train (it’s such a fun, glamorous way to travel!), but a delightful gentleman named Lord Percy (a charming man, despite the name) insisted on driving me. Turns out he keeps a magnificent stable of thoroughbreds, so we travelled in style, and arrived just in time for sunset. The sky was a glorious symphony of colours – oranges, pinks, reds, mirroring my own beloved tutu collection!

The air was filled with the sound of birdsong and the smell of sweet blossoms, and as we meandered through the beautiful streets of Small Heath, I noticed an adorable family with their own tiny tutu-wearing ballerina in training. A tiny blush of pink stole my heart - could there be anything more charming than a mini ballerina?

Now, if you know me, you know I simply must go exploring any time I find myself in a new place. My trusty map in hand (yes, I am a bit of an old soul!), I set off down the quaint lanes of Small Heath, passing a lovely, antique-filled shop (with the most beautiful vintage hat, a cerise masterpiece!), and then, oh joy! a darling little cafe. It's called "The Pink Tutu," you won’t believe it. My pink heart practically leaped! They had the most amazing array of dainty cakes – it was impossible to choose, but I finally settled on a delicate rosewater and pistachio cupcake with a pretty pink icing rose. Talk about pure, delightful indulgence!

Of course, my day wasn't complete without a little ballet practice. So I popped into the most adorable studio I have ever seen, with walls painted a breathtaking shade of ballet slipper pink, and sunshine streaming in through the windows. I was fortunate enough to be joined by a gaggle of lovely dancers - from beginner bunnies like me, all the way up to professionals. The energy was incredible. Every plié, every grand jeté, every arabesque, felt electric!

I must tell you, my lovelies, this is exactly how I envision my ideal ballet retreat. Not just any ballet retreat, mind you, but one that seamlessly blends the delicate world of ballet with nature's vibrant tapestry. Think mornings spent perfecting fouettés under the dappled shade of ancient trees, followed by afternoon picnics where the only audience is the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves.

Oh, and of course, plenty of opportunities to share my pink-tutu philosophy! Because everyone, everyone can embrace the wonder of ballet, even those who think they’ve two left feet.

Remember, the joy of movement is not just for dancers. It’s about the liberation of expressing yourself through your body, connecting with your inner grace. Whether it’s spinning with reckless abandon like a pink tutu-clad fairy, or simply moving your body with mindful awareness, we can all dance with confidence and delight.

After a lovely dinner (stuffed mushrooms and roasted veggies, healthy and divine!), I finished the day with a walk in the park. It was the most idyllic setting, with a swan serenading us with its ethereal, melodic voice. The light of a gentle moon cast a soft, romantic glow upon the scene, inspiring me to dream about the many enchanting adventures still waiting for me to uncover.

So, there you have it, my little ballet birds, another fantastic day in the life of Emma. Small Heath will be fondly etched in my memory, especially that charming little café named after my absolute favourite fashion item. Now, off to pack my bag and plan my next adventure! Remember, the journey is as much about the destination as it is about embracing the extraordinary moments along the way.

Until tomorrow, dear friends!

XOXO

Emma
