Ilkeston Adventures in a Purple Tutu: Post 1983

Oh, my darlings! It’s Emma here, and you’ve got to read all about my latest adventure, which saw me twirling and twirling my way to Ilkeston in a gorgeous, shimmering, purple tutu. Yes, I know, it’s not pink, but trust me, this lilac masterpiece was something else!

I’m just back from a fabulous day in Ilkeston. You’d be surprised what treasures you can unearth even in the most unexpected of places! As you all know, I love a good ballet performance, but even more than that, I love discovering new places to see these beautiful forms of art in action. It’s an absolutely essential part of my day job as a ballet blogger, after all. (Who needs a real job, when you’ve got a blog full of gorgeous pink tutus and magnificent ballets, eh?)

But let’s start from the beginning. Today's adventure began with me bounding out of bed feeling as energised as a ballerina on pointe, ready to conquer Ilkeston. It’s all about feeling the love, you know? I truly believe we should live life to the fullest. Embrace all the glitz and glamour that the world has to offer – and for me, that means embracing tutus in all their glorious shades. Pink, of course, remains my number one love, but I’m all for venturing out into the spectrum, like the glorious shade of lilac I found myself dancing in today. The more colour, the more joy!

So, with my tutu in hand (always, always pack a spare in your bag – you never know when you might need to put on a show, right?) and a skip in my step, I headed to the station. Now, I must confess, I’m a firm believer in train travel. There’s just something magical about gliding through the countryside. Plus, it allows me to whip out my pink notebook and doodle away to my heart's content, sketching out new outfit ideas and crafting future blog posts. But even with a tutu-obsessed girl on board, I've gotta say, the views are unbeatable - so much stunning greenery, quaint villages whizzing by... It makes you truly appreciate our fair isle, doesn’t it?

Arriving in Ilkeston, I couldn’t help but be swept up in the sheer vibrancy of the place. It was bustling with locals and visitors, creating a joyous, energetic atmosphere. It had a wonderful sense of community. That's one of the things I adore about this part of the world. The friendliness of everyone and that true sense of Derbyshire - you know, strong and grounded. That sort of resilience, I reckon, is the basis for my tutu-wearing spirit – we don’t just stand and admire the flowers, we bloom alongside them. We dance to the tune of our own hearts.

Speaking of dancing, the show I went to in Ilkeston was incredible. It was a delightful mix of ballet classics and a stunning interpretation of Swan Lake with a contemporary edge. Talk about fierce! I absolutely loved how they interpreted the white swans with delicate elegance and the black swans with incredible strength and fire. You really got to feel both the vulnerability and the power of the story through every move. The performers’ talent, precision, and the sheer grace of every gesture, it just made my heart swell.

But that’s not all! This amazing community ballet troupe had even invited me to have a little twirl on stage! So naturally, I donned that gorgeous purple tutu (which had perfect flouncy movement to compliment the contemporary style of dance!) and gave the audience a little peek into what Emma’s got to offer when it comes to impromptu performances.

You've got to know, sometimes when you’re at a ballet, you just want to get up there and join them. There's just this electrifying feeling. The sheer passion radiating from those dancers on stage! It's infectious and fills me with the need to express myself through the beauty of movement. This, my darling readers, is the power of ballet: It makes everyone feel the freedom of a grand jeté and the power of a simple arabesque.

The afternoon saw me savoring Ilkeston’s local treasures - the gorgeous market was bursting with delicious treats ( I managed to sneak a little taste of pink-hued strawberry jam for my morning toast!), artisan gifts, and blooming flowers in every shade imaginable! Then, as if the world conspired to further fuel my love for life and colour, I stumbled upon this delightful cafe with the most beautiful window displays you can imagine – brimming with blooming pink geraniums! I sat down with a lovely hot chocolate and just soaked in the pure happiness of the setting. My muse, my pink muse, was certainly alive and kicking!

As dusk settled, I wandered through the bustling town center, a kaleidoscope of colors swirling around me – purple twilight, fiery crimson neon signs reflecting on shop windows, people, oh, so many people - and me, twirling and swishing in that purple tutu, feeling the energy and the magic of the town swirling around me. This is my life, folks! This is how I choose to live: In the heart of beautiful communities, experiencing life to the full and spreading the power of ballet!

Before I bid you farewell, darlings, I’ll leave you with some of my thoughts from my trip to Ilkeston:

*My Top Ilkeston Takeaways: *

  1. Embrace every opportunity for joy. This lovely little town, full of life and laughter, made me see that even a simple outing can be a breathtaking experience when you’re open to the beauty around you.
  2. Always have a tutu ready. Even if it’s not your usual pink one. Who knows what kind of wonderful experience may await you – you could be dancing under a lilac moon, you never know!
  3. Support local, embrace the community. Ilkeston truly gave me that feeling of welcoming warmth, and it reminded me just how important community is in life – sharing, creating, celebrating - those are the ingredients of a fulfilling life,
  4. Live, laugh, dance - do it all in a pink tutu, even better! This, darlings, is the mantra to life! Let your own light shine through, let your individuality take flight!

I’ve loved sharing my Ilkeston adventure with you all – and as always, you can find me twirling around on my little pink world on my website: www.pink-tutu.com .
