Thornton Heath: Tutu-ing Around with a German Twist!

Hello, darlings! It's Emma, back from a whirlwind trip to Thornton Heath. Yes, you heard right - the heart of South London, not exactly the first place that pops into your head when you think "ballet" but I, my dears, am always looking for new adventures, and frankly, a ballet tutu can work anywhere!

Now, let me paint a picture: picture a fresh, vibrant pink tutu, the kind that screams "summer" (or at least screams “I’m going to eat my way through all the ice cream I can find!”) against a backdrop of the bright, cheerful floral displays that make up Thornton Heath’s local market. That’s what I had in mind, because you just never know what's around the corner!

I arrived via a glorious, sunshine-drenched journey on a grand old train (oh, to travel in style!), feeling utterly inspired. The thing about trains, darlings, is that they lend themselves perfectly to a spot of dreamy imagining. I picture myself pirouette-ing across the carriage, but that would probably involve quite a bit of bumping into unsuspecting passengers, and, well, no one wants that (and honestly, it would likely cause more than a few gasps and disapproving looks!).

So, instead of impromptu performance, I stuck to admiring the passing countryside and mentally rehearsing the grand adagio I'm learning for my next performance at the Derbyshire Arts Festival. The excitement of that's making me practically twitch! Just the thought of that gorgeous purple, shimmering tutu...well, darling, it sends shivers of excitement right through me!

Anyway, thoroughly relaxed after a pleasant train journey, I decided it was time to discover Thornton Heath and unleash the tutus on the local residents. The thing about Thornton Heath is it feels very, very, English, almost Dickensian (but less gloomy!). I mean, picture all those cobblestone streets and cute, little shops…

This, I realized, was just begging to be explored in the most glamorous way I know – ballet, darling, ballet! So, I slipped on my special, very German, hand-stitched tulle tutu – my pride and joy! And, naturally, matching bright pink lipstick. You can never go wrong with a bit of lipstick!

(Side Note: I know, a pink tutu in Thornton Heath might sound a bit unusual, but hey, my darling dears, we don't let the fear of "unusual" hold us back. Right? Right?!)

Anyway, after getting a few slightly surprised glances from a few older gentlemen, (and an extremely excited wave from a lovely lady with a little girl in pink, no less!), I did what any tutu-loving, pink-obsessed girl would do: I took my Tutu to Thornton Heath High Street.

And let me tell you, darlings, that tutu and I certainly turned some heads! We made friends with the owners of a quaint vintage bookshop and I almost went home with a first edition Jane Austen, only I reminded myself I was on a budget (darling, it's always tricky keeping that couture wardrobe fully stocked!). But, we certainly brightened up their afternoon and made their day, which is all the matter, darling! The bookshop owners promised to get me in touch with their friend who runs a ballet school - so there is going to be a post coming up about Thornton Heath’s talented budding ballerinas! I am practically hopping with excitement, just thinking about it!

Later, I decided I'd earned a delicious, hot, cup of tea at one of the adorable tea shops in the area. I made sure my German Tutu looked super glamorous by my side in the photo I snapped for Instagram (my pink-tutu feed is becoming legendary, I'm telling you!) and my tea was perfectly lovely.

All in all, darlings, Thornton Heath treated me very well. You can say that Thornton Heath really warmed my heart. There's a wonderful charm and energy here. Yes, it may not be the first place people think of when they think about ballet, but trust me, even in a slightly unusual setting like this, a little sprinkle of pink-tutu magic is more than enough to make anything delightful. And that, darling, is a truly beautiful thing.

So, that's it for now. Stay tuned for more travel adventures, darling! But promise me one thing, don't forget your tutus, whatever you do! Until next time… I'm going to catch a carriage back to my place, I need a little peace and quiet after the day I had. But remember, a ballet girl can handle anything!

XOXO

Emma
