Dover Dreams in a Fairy Tutu

Hello my darling Tutu Lovers! It’s Emma here, back from a whirlwind trip to the beautiful, historic town of Dover, where I felt like a fairy princess, and believe me, it had nothing to do with the white cliffs!

I had to take the train to Dover this time. You see, darling, the horses were having their hooves done - fancy shoe polish and all! - and as a good horse-owner, I like to spoil them! However, I found it so romantic, just chugging through the countryside on the old train, watching the world go by, clutching my tutu bag tightly. I’d already decided I wanted to wear my new Fairy Tutu for this trip - its a perfect combination of pink, shimmery pink and tulle. So very dreamy, especially under a grey and cloudy sky!

As soon as we arrived, it was clear that the fairy vibe was alive and well. The sky, though gloomy, was a kind of hazy, swirling, cotton wool white, so like the clouds in fairytales, and a little gust of wind came swirling past with a faint scent of salt and...I swear I caught a glimpse of the flutter of something small, delicate, pink... maybe just a butterfly but it did make me feel a little magical!

I decided on a nice little seaside hotel to stay in. Oh, you know, one with white walls, charming, small windows and lots of seagull sounds! So very traditional seaside, so romantic... the kind of place where they keep a box of vintage games like Scrabble, so we had a game after dinner with the whole family! My Nana absolutely demolished me. She always has.

The first thing I did, though, was grab a coffee, change into my Tutu, and head to the beach. It felt lovely; the sand, the fresh air, and just me, surrounded by the biggest and most dramatic sea view I’d ever seen, the endless blue merging with the sky… Even the clouds felt whimsical - some round like fluffy balls and some so long and low like they were dragging their bottoms in the waves… and they moved so slow, so dreamy and… and… dare I say it…. a tiny bit magical!

I was going to write that I had to do a pirouette on the beach… I have to, darling - it’s an unwritten law! A dancer’s got to dance in all locations, all settings, don’t you know!

But, darling, you know how it is… a slight sea breeze can ruin any attempt at elegant spinning! Not even tutu magic is going to save you. I had a lot of hair whipping around and one little near-disaster tumble, but I just thought of it as a bit of good old British seaside fun, you know!

Speaking of good old British seaside fun, I took a boat tour. You wouldn’t believe it, but just off the shore… I saw, sealife!

The boat went on past a whole little colony of seals, who had hauled themselves up on a sandy bit of the rocky shore, looking like… I don’t know what…. a big fluffy, lazy dog with a wet, furry bum … and a flipper…. !

Then the boats captain (a bit of a cheeky chap really, but then I expect you have to be, with all the tourists, so much of the year) said they would try to attract some dolphins if I wanted… darling, I couldn’t believe my luck!

I spent the whole journey watching out for anything jumping out of the waves, any shape or shade… oh my goodness! it was exciting. But no, we weren’t lucky enough. Still, I was completely entranced and had such fun just trying to see everything… little boats bobbing in the sea, little beach shacks and colourful beach umbrellas… even a little pink one, bless it’s heart!

Of course I saw Dover Castle (what else?!). This historic building has been used as a defence and fortress against all sorts of invasions, you know, even by Julius Caesar (think of all the costumes and battles – the stories it could tell if it had a mouth! ). I thought to myself what tutus and dance moves might have made the battles even more fabulous and then a silly giggle burst out and I had to stifle it, don’t want the whole fortress collapsing down, do we? It must be a bit lonely as well… I certainly can’t be the only person in all this history who thinks it could do with a splash of pink. And you know, maybe a little bit of tutu !

I even had a delicious Cream Tea with tutus and pink on my mind! Oh yes! It was right there by the white cliffs (they are actually that white) in a tiny little tearoom that only a local would ever know about - the sign said it was built centuries ago... oh, don't you just love it when places are that old and have that kind of charm?!

They made their own clotted cream, you know… handmade fresh cream deliciously and I told them I thought my fairy tutu deserved it all and the lady just smiled and nodded…. as if she completely understood and felt like a little fairy herself in her lovely little cottage with her homemade cream .

The afternoon sun actually came out for a little while…. but then there was another wind (how can there be so many gusts? they never stop in this place!) … and the sky turned dark, dark gray… like you wouldn’t believe.

So that’s it, darling, from Dover. I am going to put this experience on the top of the list for anyone visiting England – go for the history, the views and especially for the magic. A little pink magic… the Fairy Tutu magic…. I know you are going to want to do a little bit of dancing… in a tutu too… so I say get yourselves a tutu and head out, darlings…. and see if you catch a glimpse of some magic… I bet you will!

See you tomorrow, my lovelies….
