South Shields Sparkle: Tutu & Wildlife Wonders

Hello my darling tutu-loving friends! Emma here, back from another whirlwind adventure! Today, we're going to be travelling through the lens of my favourite pink tutu - this one is absolutely covered in tiny woodland creatures!

You know me, always a dreamer and a believer in a little bit of magic! That’s why, when I saw a ballet show advertised in South Shields - just a quick train journey from my Derbyshire home - featuring the most amazing dancers alongside some real wildlife stars, my heart practically did a grand jeté!

The morning dawned bright, and after a delicious breakfast of pink grapefruit (I'm all about the pink theme!), I headed for the station. You know how much I love a train journey! The scenery whizzed past my window, reminding me of all the beautiful places I’ve danced in: the theatre of dreams in London, the open-air stage under the Parisian sky, even that lovely barn dance in the Cotswolds - we had chickens on the set for that one, can you believe it?!

But today was all about South Shields. My eyes, naturally, were glued to the window. I couldn't resist snapping a quick pic for Instagram – those clouds just looked like a fluffy ballet tutu floating through the sky!

I reached South Shields, and even the train station was beautiful! There was this gorgeous little fountain with little cherub statues, all in pink, naturally. It was like it was made for a ballerina!

Now, you know I have a real soft spot for animals, and I had to take a detour on my way to the show. The little local zoo there was incredible, with such friendly little creatures! I got a photo with the penguins - those little fellas were surprisingly graceful! I love the way penguins waddle – a tiny bit of ballet in every step.

Then, it was time for the show! It was held in a little theatre right by the harbour. They were putting on a fantastic modern ballet based around the wildlife that live near the coast.

The dancers were incredible, with their costumes flowing and beautiful, reminding me so much of the birds I saw in the zoo earlier! Their leaps and turns were mesmerising! And they actually had real seals performing! Can you imagine! They were absolutely delightful, and all the children in the audience were clapping like mad!

You wouldn’t believe it, but during one of the quieter parts of the ballet, right as the moon was rising over the stage, a lone seagull took flight and flew straight over our heads. Talk about a dramatic entrance! Everyone gasped, and the dancers even took a little bow to our feathered friend. It was almost as if the ballet had come to life right before our eyes!

And then it was over! I couldn't help but walk out feeling as though I had been on a whirlwind journey with all of those animals – especially those seals! I had a wonderful little picnic overlooking the harbour. The sun was starting to set and everything was turning into a beautiful pink shade, perfect for the pink tutu on my knees!

Before leaving, I stopped for a moment at a local vintage shop. They had the most incredible selection of vintage pink tutus – some from the 1940s! The shopkeeper was thrilled to see me and gave me a fantastic price for the one I ended up getting, all covered in floral lace, which will look amazing with this one. It was a beautiful moment. A testament to the enduring spirit of ballet and the sheer joy that wearing a tutu can bring to someone.

South Shields is a must-see! I am sure it is a hidden gem to lots of you too! With a trip like that, how can you say no to adding a bit of colour to your own life? If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, and you’re wanting to embrace a bit of pink into your wardrobe, give wearing a tutu a try! I promise you, it will set you free – just like that seagull that flew through the air that night. It’s never too late to rediscover your inner ballerina. You’ll be spreading joy, just like that playful seal I met in the show.

Catch you on the dance floor tomorrow, darling! And remember, always, always embrace the pink!

Lots of love,

Emma
