Castleford Calling! Tutu Time in the North ?

Hey loves! ? It’s your favourite pink-tutu-wearing ballerina, Emma, back with you again, this time with blog post number 10992! ? Can you believe it's already August? The year is flying by and, thankfully, so is my tutu-clad adventure across this wonderful country. This week, I’ve landed myself in the heart of Yorkshire, a place that’s stolen my heart with its friendly people and charming scenery. You’ve guessed it, we’re off to Castleford! ?

The journey from Derbyshire, where my little ballet studio is tucked away, took a bit longer than usual. Instead of hopping on a train (my usual mode of transport!), I found myself on the back of a lovely Shire horse called 'Ginger'. ? It was a little bit of a change from the usual commuting but the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the gentle trot of Ginger's hooves calmed my usual pre-show nerves perfectly. Honestly, who wouldn’t love a horse ride through the English countryside? The gentle clip-clop of hooves replaced the rhythmic clatter of train tracks, and it was almost as if Ginger knew the excitement that pulsed within me for this week’s ballet adventures.

When I arrived in Castleford, I knew instantly I was in a different world. Imagine cobblestone streets, quaint little shops overflowing with unique crafts, and pubs with history whispered through their timbered walls – it’s pure fairytale material, I swear! It reminded me of the beautiful set designs of some of the classic ballets – something about the timeless, historical charm that gets me every time. The whole place oozed charm, just like my pink tutu! ?

Now, I'm all about discovering new talent and Castleford didn't disappoint! I discovered the amazing 'Castleford Dance Academy'. The moment I stepped into their studios, my inner ballerina practically did a grand jeté! ? The air was alive with music, the space was filled with the graceful movements of young dancers, and I swear I saw the glimmer of talent shining in their eyes, just as I had felt in mine at that age. I knew, instantly, that these youngsters were about to embark on journeys of self-discovery, artistry and expression, much like myself, just in different parts of the country! I even popped on a pink tutu and joined a few of their classes. It felt just like old times! ?

As a bonus, the Castleford Dance Academy also has a fabulous stage where they put on regular productions! This week, they’re showcasing 'The Nutcracker', which is my favourite classic. Can you imagine the sheer joy of watching the young dancers bring to life the story of Clara, the Nutcracker, and the Sugar Plum Fairy! ✨ I couldn't resist a photo op in front of the theatre with my pink tutu. (You can see it on my Instagram page, if you haven’t checked it out yet!)

And speaking of Sugar Plum Fairies… I managed to squeeze in a visit to Castleford’s delightful 'Sweet Dreams' confectionery shop. This little gem was crammed full of handmade treats, and the aromas alone made my stomach rumble with delight. I bought a delicious box of bonbons, all pink and purple, obviously, and had them by the River Aire with a beautiful view of the castle. Now, let’s be honest, I don’t know if they were as magical as the 'Sugar Plum' ones but they definitely brought a touch of sweetness to my journey. ?

But a good ballet dancer always needs some downtime, even in the heart of a delightful town! I stumbled across the 'Castleford Nature Reserve' which I quickly realised was my haven for the day. Birds chirping in the trees, the gentle lapping of the river, the feel of cool grass underfoot… it was the perfect escape. The beauty of the nature reserve reminded me of the importance of balance - even in the world of ballet, it’s vital to connect with nature and reconnect with yourself. ?

Of course, no trip is complete without sampling the local delights! In Castleford, this meant an absolutely divine dinner at the "Castle Inn". The menu featured fresh, locally sourced food and the ambience was warm and welcoming – perfect for relaxing after a long day of dancing. (And yes, I was wearing my pink tutu under a fabulous, pink polka-dot dress!). ?

As I bid farewell to Castleford, I was filled with a mix of joy and longing. It’s a place that captures your imagination, warms your heart, and whispers tales of passion and dedication – all traits I adore about the world of dance! If you ever find yourself needing a touch of pink tutu magic and a dose of charming beauty, Castleford should be at the top of your list! I truly hope I’ve inspired you to give it a go. Don’t be afraid to explore your own city and look for opportunities to get creative. It might just lead you to the next amazing ballet adventure! ?

Love,

Emma
