Oh my darling readers, do you ever get that feeling, the one where you know you're meant to be somewhere? It's like a little butterfly flutter in your heart that insists, "Go! Go explore! You won't regret it!" That's exactly what happened to me this week, a whisper on the wind urging me to head north to Edmonton, a city brimming with creativity and energy. Now, I know you lovely people adore hearing about my adventures, and you know I wouldn't keep this dazzling discovery from you.
Edmonton - a name that sounds like a gentle, flowing stream - drew me in like a magnet. There's just something about the wide-open spaces of the Canadian prairies, something so powerful and inspiring, that I knew I needed to experience it. After all, isn't exploring the world part of what makes us truly alive? And Edmonton was more than just prairies – it was ballet! Yes, you heard right, my friends, the vibrant city of Edmonton boasted a thriving ballet scene, making it a veritable paradise for a ballerina like me!
My journey started with a delightful train ride, one of those epic, luxurious trips that makes you feel like a princess. Watching the world go by through the window, every rolling meadow and misty forest a magical tapestry of beauty. The carriage was all soft cushions, fluffy blankets, and calming sunshine. Even though it was winter, a blanket of crisp, sparkly snow dusted the landscapes, creating a wonderland straight out of a fairy tale. Who knew travelling could be so darn dreamy?!
Arriving in Edmonton, I felt an instant rush of warmth, like I'd landed in the heart of a welcoming hug. There was an easy, breezy air about the city, with people smiling and laughing as they strolled along. I swear, I could almost hear the wind whisper, "Welcome, welcome! You are home here!"
And it was. Within minutes, I was hopping on a horse-drawn carriage, feeling the gentle clip-clop of hooves against the cobbled streets, the fresh winter air whipping through my hair as we made our way to the famous Edmonton Ballet. The horses were so majestic, their glossy coats gleaming under the sun - and those strong, intelligent eyes… pure magic.
Walking through the grand doors of the theatre, I was greeted by an orchestra tuning their instruments, a flurry of elegant ballerinas rehearsing in the shadows, and a scent of fresh-cut flowers and history, all swirling in the air like the most divine perfume. You know I couldn't resist twirling once I was inside – who can resist the thrill of being surrounded by so much beauty?
And the performance? Oh, my darlings, words simply can't capture the breathtaking magic! Every graceful leap, every elegant pirouette, the sheer artistry of it all was a gift, a dream come alive on the stage. And I found myself swept away, caught in a vortex of beauty, feeling the emotions swirling through me, like a powerful current leading me to another world. The story was heart-warming, full of hope and resilience, reminding me of the beauty we find in kindness and forgiveness.
That night, after the show, I was lucky enough to meet some of the amazing dancers from Edmonton Ballet. Their stories – filled with dreams and determination, practice and sacrifice, and ultimately, the sheer joy of being artists - filled me with admiration.
They told me how much they love their home city, Edmonton, a place they describe as “wild at heart, but gentle at its core”, with wide-open spaces perfect for exploring and finding inner peace.
We sat and talked late into the night, sharing stories and laughter. They shared a piece of their journey with me, and I offered them some of mine. And for those brief precious hours, I realised just how much our passions connect us. We all share a love of the beautiful, of stories and music, of using our bodies to express our souls. They showed me around the city, taking me to quaint cafés and hidden alleyways, showing me the secrets of their city. I discovered so many fascinating hidden gems in the heart of this wild and welcoming place, reminding me of the beauty I can find in unexpected corners. And of course, every single one of them encouraged me to visit the Edmonton Valley Zoo. It was so much fun! Watching the penguins frolicking in their pool made me giggle like a child - who can resist their little waddles and awkward dives? It was just adorable!
And while I was exploring, I had to share my favourite shade, the colour of my soul - pink, naturally! I went a bit overboard at the Tutus of Edmonton store – just a small splurge of tutus! A stunning new pink tutu, fluffy and full of life, just perfect for twirling around those prairie trails. (Who needs a walk, anyway?! A proper ballerina skips!).
But my biggest treat was attending a ballet masterclass, an unforgettable experience that allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and try new things! I was thrown into a flurry of plies and pirouettes, guided by experienced teachers, sharing the floor with a bunch of enthusiastic and talented dancers. You could say my new German Tutu had its work cut out for it – so much fun and learning in the company of others who shared my passion!
I loved learning new routines, feeling the music rush through me, and the warmth of being embraced by this welcoming dance community. We laughed together, learned together, and explored together - creating friendships that felt as strong and enduring as a graceful tendu and as vibrant as my favourite pink tutu.
Before I left, I met the incredibly talented local artist, Emma Watson, a young woman with such a passion for creating her art – her words flowed with a natural elegance. I asked her why she fell in love with Edmonton and this is what she said – “It’s the perfect mix of big city buzz and small-town warmth…it’s inspiring.”
She told me about all the art studios, independent shops, and quirky coffee shops dotting the city, each one brimming with its own unique personality. She was adamant – every corner of Edmonton holds a treasure, waiting to be uncovered.
Emma and I bonded over the magical connection we felt towards ballets shoes and tutu’s. She admitted she found inspiration from the world of dance, finding grace and freedom in every move she created. It reminded me of my favourite phrase “Move with grace. Dance with passion.”
Her words, her passion, and her artistic talent echoed through my soul long after we’d said goodbye. And Edmonton - oh, my Edmonton – a city full of heart and vibrant dreams, your warmth will stay with me, my friend, just as those gentle, heartfelt whispers.
And to you, dear readers, if you have an inkling in your heart, if a little butterfly flutter guides you, then don’t hesitate. Take a leap of faith! Embrace your inner explorer, put on a pink tutu (the bolder, the better!) and jump onto that train, or perhaps a gentle horse-drawn carriage - your next big adventure awaits!
