Hello my lovely darlings! Emma here, reporting live from the most adorable little town - Newton Aycliffe!
I'm honestly starting to feel like a travelling tutu-wearing butterfly. You've got to admit, it's a pretty wonderful way to live. This post is number 11337 - yes, the lucky number! I think it's a good omen for a brilliant time here.
Today's adventure began in style - my trusty horse, 'Buttercup' - a little chestnut with the sweetest temperament you ever did see, delivered me straight to the train station. Buttercup may not understand the beauty of a good pointe shoe, but she does know how to take a great trot! And, let's be honest, sometimes a horse is just a bit more glamorous than a stuffy, crowded Tube, don't you think?
The train ride was like something out of a Jane Austen novel - dappled sunlight, rolling countryside, and the gentle clatter of wheels on track. I practically danced my way to Newton Aycliffe - a little twirl here, a little prance there. Who knew a train journey could be so entertaining?
And speaking of entertaining, guess what? Newton Aycliffe is just bursting with all things ballet!
First things first, the ballet school here, "DanceSteps" - adorable, wouldn't you say? The whole building is painted pink, and you literally can't walk past it without getting a huge smile on your face! Their studio has a lovely, open-air dance floor and their ballet classes are a perfect mix of grace, strength, and joyful movement - just like the way I like to dance! I signed up for a class, of course, and you won't believe the adorable outfit they made me try on: A pink, sparkling, tutued jumpsuit! (Did I tell you I just love tutus? ?) Needless to say, it's now my new favourite piece of dance wear.
Then, I ventured into town for a proper little tour. Now, this is what I love about these smaller, hidden gem towns, the whole place has this cosy, friendly feel, and the locals are just as lovely! I popped into the local cafe, 'The Ballerina Bistro', for a cheeky bit of pink-tutu themed cake (think: macarons, rosewater, and enough pink to blush!) while I waited for my lovely new friend, Sophie, to meet me.
Sophie, by the way, is just the most wonderfully creative ballet enthusiast you could meet. She designs the most unique ballet costumes you've ever seen - you know I adore tutus, but she's got tutus made of everything you can imagine. (And yes, even some things you can't! I'm not allowed to reveal her secrets.) She took me for a delicious, picnic-style lunch by the River Wear - the river, which is part of the picturesque and serene parkland here. Sophie had packed everything, pink themed of course: pink lemonade, a bright pink picnic rug and even pink themed salad sandwiches. After our picnic we went to the River Wear for a spontaneous "pink-tutu" photo shoot - because why not!
You know, Newton Aycliffe, though small, truly embraced its artistic side! There was even a little ballet festival happening while we were here! The streets were buzzing with colourful dancers in all sorts of costumes, with music and laughter everywhere you looked! I even met a sweet old lady with a little white fluffy dog called "Tutu", which made me squeal with delight - how adorable is that?!
Sophie and I even took a peek inside the beautiful theatre here. It’s just lovely. It's a gorgeous, traditional theatre with a wonderful stage and elegant décor - not your typical town hall affair! Sophie is a bit of a local celebrity, she's involved in so many projects and charity events here. She told me about their plans for a future ballets 'CinderTutu' and 'Tutu Telle' which I thought were hilarious and full of such vibrant imagination!
Later in the day, after a little retail therapy (couldn't resist picking up a brand new pair of pink ballet shoes! - more details to follow later on the blog!)- Sophie led me on an adventurous wildlife tour!
Sophie says, the beautiful open green spaces, alongside the river and woodlands, makes this an absolute paradise for wildlife - and who doesn't love wildlife? She showed me all sorts of fascinating little creatures like the Common Snipe (with its ridiculously long beak - they even sound funny!), The Heron - they do have the most graceful necks - and an absolutely enormous flock of ducks which really brought back fond childhood memories for me - oh to have such carefree joy once again.
By the time the evening rolled around, it felt as if I'd fallen in love with Newton Aycliffe. This place has the warmth and charm that makes you feel instantly welcome and at home. The perfect combination of natural beauty, a buzzing ballet community, and some genuinely delightful people!
Just when you think a day can't get any better, my trusty 'Buttercup' was waiting to take me back to the train station. I climbed on his back, a little bittersweet because I had such a lovely time, and we rode back towards my comfy little home in Derbyshire. But you know, I won't be saying goodbye forever. Newton Aycliffe has a little space in my heart now, and it’s officially added to my must-visit list - especially when I have another spare tutu!
