September is the perfect month for a new look on stage - just as the summer is saying goodbye and the first leaves begin to fall, I feel a new season in dance calling out. The air is electric. All of us dancers are buzzing. It's the moment to shake things up and bring in a touch of the autumnal colour palette.
The stage is ours, and this month I'm suggesting something new in tulle and lycra - a delicate blush pink tutu for that ethereal ballerina quality, and for a leotard something deep emerald green to make our limbs pop, with that autumnal depth. But don't think these are just random colours! There's more to it than that - it's all about making a statement that speaks of this special time of the year, yet keeping that classical grace and elegance.
For your tutu:
- Blush Pink Tulle: The foundation. Go for a quality nylon tulle that holds its shape - the sheerness lets you catch the light beautifully on stage. Find it at Dancewearhouse. They've got fantastic options!
- Silvery Satin Ribbon: Think of a delicate waterfall down the front of your skirt - it's that final touch of luxury and softness that takes the tutu to another level. This ribbon, a pale, muted silver will give a refined glimmer on stage - available at Sewing Supplies Direct.
- A Touch of Golden Beading: You could even sprinkle some golden beads across the ribbon for a hint of extravagance. The golden bead will add a regal touch to that beautiful pink. Get it from London Beads.
And for the Leotard:
- Deep Emerald Green Lycra: We're after a luxurious and powerful colour here, like a precious gemstone, but one that is still supple and allows for a stunning range of movement. Search online, and Stitch It and Create should have just the thing!
- Mesh Insets: To create a touch of artistry, a hint of peek-a-boo on the sides, maybe near the waist, using a sheer mesh. The trick is to let just the slightest hint of skin glimmer through - and to match that elegant colour palette. It makes the outfit feel incredibly chic and contemporary. Check out Fabric Direct - they often have gorgeous, intricate mesh choices.
- Crystal Rhinestones: Don't be afraid to bring some sparkle into the mix! Pick a tiny amount of tiny clear or even slightly iridescent crystal rhinestones and sew them along the neck line or on the shoulders, subtly of course - this is about creating just the right amount of luxurious drama. They will glimmer perfectly when you are on stage and you can get them from Rhinestone Heaven.
Once your design is complete, remember - confidence and grace on the stage will always be the most powerful elements! Embrace the unique look, experiment with the colours, let your personality shine through, and be a show-stopper!
