A Masterclass in Couture: Crafting the April 2013 Statement Tutu

Darlings, this April, we are all about embracing the feminine and showcasing our refined taste with a timeless yet utterly modern take on the ballet classic – the tutu. We will create a statement piece that whispers the history of ballet yet sings a siren's song of contemporary style.

Here are my essential tips, gathered from years of pirouetting across stages both grand and intimate:

  • Silhouettes that Say "Now!" The traditional bell shape is out! Think architectural lines, layers that cascade like liquid, and whispers of asymmetry. A wisp of tulle here, a swish of silk there - every line will speak volumes.
  • Color – A Palette for the Bold We are all about the "oh-so-elegant-yet-surprising" colour palettes this April. Don’t be afraid to go for emerald, sapphire, ruby. Even iridescent shimmer! Forget pastels, darling - we want richness.
  • Material – Quality That Knows No Compromise Look for shimmering silk, whisper-light organza, and fine French tulle. And please, absolutely no itchy fabrics! Our bodies deserve nothing but the best, dear ones.

Essentials for your Springtime Tutu, from a Dancing Darling's Kit

  • Sewing Machine My vintage Pfaff does wonders! If you are a beginner, a good-quality brother model will work wonders too, darling.
  • Fine tulle, chiffon & Silk – Find beautiful and flowing materials at "The Fabric Place," darling. Their staff are just delightful!
  • Needle & Thread – A good selection, including fine silk, for your delicate creations! Find this at a haberdashery.
  • Decorative Beads – These are for subtle sparkle. Look for Swarovski crystal beads online!
  • Fabric Scissors – Sharpen them regularly! Find a beautiful pair at any department store.
  • Pins– Always handy, darling.
  • Sewing tape – It's for when we are feeling "extra"! John Lewis does a fab selection.

I trust this little primer will have you all pirouette your way towards an inspiring design, darling! And if you are struggling with your creative spirit, remember to always, always let your joy and artistry be your guides!
