Pink Tutu Design and Make at www pink tutu com

Darling, it’s May! The time for blossoming blooms and fresh starts! This month’s ballet must have? It's all about capturing that ethereal, whimsical spirit, and a leotard or tutu needs to perfectly embody that airy feeling. Now, you don't want to just throw on any old leotard – no, we're crafting a statement, darling. Let's bring those timeless classic silhouettes into the 21st century.

Designing Your Dream Leotard

To begin with, it’s a simple idea and you need only a few key items:

  • A quality leotard. Start with a simple, classic style, ideally with a beautiful, subtle shade of pale lilac or soft sky blue – think cloud nine, my dear! Don't be afraid of colour; these delicate pastels will make you positively radiate, particularly with an ultra-fine shimmer added. Check out brands like Dancewear Central, Freed, and Capezio. They have amazing options, darling, from basic to elaborate, but stick to the classics! You’ll also find some amazing, up-and-coming, more artisanal options. Do your research - think Instagram for ballet dancers.
  • Fabric The fabric is key! Opt for stretch mesh, organza or chiffons for that sheer and light feeling. There are beautiful floral embroideries around at the moment so maybe opt for a simple sheer leotard with intricate flower embellishments for a more feminine look, like delicate rosebud accents around the neck and neckline or shoulders. The key is to keep it subtle and chic. Look for lace if you're looking for an artisanal touch - a tiny scrap goes a long way! You will need something that looks expensive so for lace we recommend you try Liberty fabrics. The Liberty Tana Lawn cotton will add just the right level of decadence and the colours will enhance the floral look.
  • Rhinestones or sequins Think minimal - these should be strategically placed for a glamorous and refined look. Don’t go overboard or it will become tacky. We’re talking one or two key accent points - small, elegant clusters near the neckline, or along a flowing arm line. You'll need some glue or beading thread. Check out the shops on Berwick Street - that's where I'd go in London to get this look and style. They'll have some vintage materials to go with your Liberty!
Crafting a Whimsical Tutu

Remember how those fairytale ballerinas seemed to float across the stage? We'll be using those gorgeous tutus for inspiration!

  • A classic tulle tutu Begin with the traditional style! Choose a tutu with multiple layers, ideally made of soft, billowing tulle. It needs to look grand! Ballet Rosa and Danskin are my favourites for basic styles - they are a bit pricey though so make sure you choose a timeless classic if you buy these - one that won’t go out of style!
  • Light & Airy Fabric - Consider silk tulle - this feels incredibly luxurious and adds to the airy effect. It's pricier but adds such quality, the light will bounce beautifully and add movement and depth to your performance, and therefore, stage presence! Look for suppliers online – the shops on Berwick Street don’t really sell this. They tend to focus on lace and ribbon.
  • Embellishments A few key embellishments like hand-crafted ribbon bows, delicate feather trim around the waist, or even small silk flowers - sparingly!

Whatever style you choose, my darling, remember to stay true to your artistic vision and let your imagination take flight. And above all, enjoy the process of creating something beautiful and truly expressive, something to make heads turn and leave the audience wanting more. The joy in this creation comes from embracing the sheer elegance and timeless grace you’re capturing, darling!
