Darling, this is your summer for creating the hottest ballet look. This July is about timeless chic with a splash of fun. Trust me, my little doves, because I’ve danced in all the best studios from Covent Garden to New York’s Lincoln Center and know how to turn heads, from my ballerina days in the 80’s to now. Here is how to create this month's must-have tutu or leotard:
- Base it all on the most iconic tutu colour of all: Blush! I know what you are thinking, but trust me, it is a real head turner and never goes out of style.
- Add a touch of bold, and daring. A burst of hot coral tulle, just a small section, in the underlay of your tutu is all you need to be seen from across the studio and stand out, without compromising elegance. Think a hint of flamingo in a cloud of blush pink.
- Then it’s about detailing my lovelies, adding texture. Use some of the shimmering satin ribbon you've got tucked away (and don’t worry if you have none – I’m going to recommend where to get some). Add it to the waistline, or if you are designing a leotard – maybe around the neck or a little on the bodice, for just a flash.
- Think back to 50’s vintage styling, a real elegant edge! You must finish with a pair of the finest black satin ballet shoes. The contrast will give your look a stunning edge, without needing to go over the top. Trust me, darling!
- Always think of elegance with a pinch of whimsicality, a perfect contrast of class and youth. The ballerina who dares to wear it will truly make her mark.
You are going to need a few essential items, my loves:
- A **tutu**, in either **blush**, or **ivory**
- A **small length of coral tulle** (for adding underlay in the tutu) or some coral **stretchy dance fabric**
- A **roll of satin ribbon,** **ivory** or **blush**, it doesn’t matter too much!
- A pair of **satin ballet shoes**, in a timeless **black**
Now for the shopping, darling! I don’t want to bore you with boring places you won't know where to look...
The absolute best, the iconic and must-go for all budding ballerinas is **“Dance World,” in London’s Covent Garden. Trust me on this darling.
They are so obliging, that I have a feeling they will give you that extra piece of pink tulle, just to see your wonderful ideas come to life. But don’t go for cheap options. Quality will help to see this tutu look take you well into autumn, darling. I can guarantee, with just a little touch of style and effort, this design will turn the most jaded dance teacher into your biggest fan.
Let me know what you think my loves. Remember: beauty is timeless. Be confident! And good luck with your own unique style darling.
