My darlings, This month, the ballet world has been absolutely buzzing with incredible performances! It's hard to know where to start, really. From the hallowed halls of the Bolshoi to the shimmering stages of New York, there’s been something to inspire every taste. Let me tell you, I was simply transported to another realm watching the divine Sylvie Guillem in Paris. The way she danced *Giselle* was a masterclass in the art of disappearing into a role, her movement, at once both fragile and powerful. A real treat! I had the chance to visit the Royal Opera House in London for their performance of *The Nutcracker* this month. Their rendition was dazzling, with a certain charm that's hard to resist. The set was gorgeous - a proper winter wonderland – and the dancing, simply breathtaking! They even brought on some cute children, a real heart-warming touch. But speaking of enchanting productions, I have to mention the New York City Ballet, my absolute favourite company. Their performances of *The Four Seasons* and *Concerto Barocco* left me speechless, truly. There’s something special about watching dancers glide and pirouette across the stage in these grand classical pieces. So effortless! It's a testament to years and years of rigorous training, but it's never anything less than sheer artistry, darlings. And while we’re on the topic of artistry, one must give a special shoutout to Mikhail Baryshnikov, a true legend, of course. He’s still got it, darlings. His return to the stage was simply captivating. The power, the grace, and the elegance. I was enthralled, absolutely enthralled.
Speaking of talent, it’s wonderful to see such a resurgence of modern ballet companies popping up everywhere. In Milan, I was blown away by Aterballetto, their contemporary style really resonated with me. I loved how their dancers embodied emotions and stories with their every movement. The beauty of ballet can be expressed in so many ways, and I appreciate how these new companies aren’t afraid to experiment and challenge the boundaries of traditional ballet. I did find myself particularly captivated by the Nederlands Dans Theater this month, with their *Sacre* performance, which is so powerful. Such sheer athleticism in the movement! The music is also incredible. It really transports you to a different place, emotionally. Across the pond in Boston, the Boston Ballet truly impressed with their rendition of *Romeo and Juliet*, and the set design, darlings, just extraordinary! I must tell you, this story never fails to evoke emotions, especially the iconic balcony scene, it truly sends shivers down your spine. I must say, though, that one ballet production this month really had me absolutely captivated – the San Francisco Ballet’s rendition of *Don Quixote* was extraordinary! So beautifully choreographed, with incredible dancers and captivating costumes. I adore the humour, and that sense of pure escapism – you’re simply whisked away. And the final scene with the Don Quixote himself? Simply perfection.
Now, speaking of perfect, there are a few new trends in ballet I've been absolutely adoring, especially the recent emphasis on ballet costumes that have a real sense of individuality and sophistication. It's quite nice, darlings, because they make each dancer feel empowered, especially in modern performances. The focus isn't always on just making a statement on stage, but really being in tune with each individual artist's expression. I was in awe with a show at the Sydney Opera House – the costume design for the piece really allowed each dancer to shine in her own way. Also, a wonderful trend that's gaining popularity - a growing focus on diversity within ballet. I find it incredibly uplifting and encouraging, that it is becoming more open to dancers of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Seeing so many wonderful performers coming to the fore is so inspirational, really, because it says something incredible – ballet, in all its glorious form, belongs to everyone. So, whether it’s in the timeless elegance of the classical or the dynamic innovation of the modern, ballet continues to captivate, and as we look forward to the rest of 1997, I have no doubt that the magic of ballet will continue to surprise and delight us all. Until next time, darling readers! Stay fashionable, stay chic, and stay en pointe.
