My dears, the ballet world is in full bloom this Spring! It feels like the world's finest choreographers have finally shrugged off their winter chills and unleashed a tidal wave of colour, movement, and sheer brilliance. I must say, this season has me positively smitten, with highlights from both sides of the Atlantic that have me floating on clouds of artistic rapture.
First, let's transport ourselves to the city of lights, darling, where the *Bolshoi* is simply incandescent. I am positively captivated by **"Swan Lake"**, and their **"La Bayadere"** is quite divine, a veritable kaleidoscope of talent. These dancers, darling, they embody passion and finesse in equal measure! But what really took my breath away was a newcomer, a vision in pink tulle. I must find out who that lovely thing is, she has a most promising future ahead of her.
Speaking of future, **"The Sleeping Beauty"** at **Covent Garden** has me reminiscing about my own days on pointe. This production has a timeless beauty that truly transports you to a fairytale world. I do find, however, the pacing a tad slow for modern sensibilities.
Across the pond, the *American Ballet Theatre* is ablaze with energy. **"Giselle"** is utterly enchanting, and I must admit to shedding a tear or two at the end. My dear friend Misty Copeland was, as always, magnificent. She moves like a feather in the wind, so effortless and sublime. The new **"Romeo and Juliet"**, on the other hand, is rather confusing, I'm afraid. Not bad, simply a bit heavy on the interpretation and light on the story telling. One should never stray too far from the classics, wouldn’t you agree?
But let's talk about innovation, shall we? I find myself completely beguiled by **"The Rite of Spring"**, the new rendition by the brilliant choreographer, Martha Graham, now available at the **New York City Ballet**. Her approach is utterly groundbreaking, raw, and so very *modern*. There is something terribly compelling about it. Of course, there is always the odd disgruntled theatregoer who claims it’s just "loud noise" and a "pile of writhing bodies". My dear, don't be swayed by such comments. These are merely the words of those clinging to convention, their hearts too closed to experience art's vibrant potential.
One must not, however, forget the sheer brilliance of the established names. The incomparable Rudolf Nureyev still captures hearts and imaginations. He will be returning to the *Bolshoi* next season for a *farewell performance*! I understand it will be an exclusive **“Swan Lake”**, only three performances for the few lucky ticket holders! Now this, my darlings, will be an occasion not to be missed!
Now, one cannot simply talk about the world of dance without mentioning its supporting arts, can one? And let's face it, a ballet performance, particularly a “Swan Lake” simply wouldn't be the same without an opulent and ravishing costume and stage design. That is why the **Royal Opera House**, in its eternal commitment to excellence, has just hosted a fabulous exhibition: “**Fashion and Dance – A Century of Innovation”.** A perfect blend of art and fashion.
So there we have it, my dears, a glimpse into the extraordinary world of dance. A world filled with artistry, passion, and endless creativity. But if I may leave you with just one final piece of advice, one that has served me well throughout my own career, embrace the new, cherish the classics, and above all, let dance fill your hearts and souls.
On The Scene:
Here’s a peek into the hottest ballet events happening this spring:
- The *New York City Ballet* has been taking *The Rite of Spring* to unprecedented heights.
- **“Carmen”** at the *Royal Ballet* promises to be captivating.
- Don't miss **"Cinderella"** at the **English National Ballet**. The enchanting tale of the girl transformed!
- I hear **“Swan Lake”** at **San Francisco Ballet** has a completely unique interpretation.
- The *American Ballet Theatre* presents its stunning production of **"The Sleeping Beauty"** on April 22.
My Muse:
Who am I crushing on this month? Why, Natalia Osipova, of course. This incredible woman's talent knows no bounds, her versatility astounding! The way she seamlessly blends the classic with the modern... breathtaking! I also find myself rather smitten with the elegant and powerful dance of Polina Semionova of the *Bolshoi*. Such passion, such fire, such raw emotion in her performances! It reminds me of my youth!
For My Love of Fashion:
- “The ballet is the poetry of motion; its costumes, the poetry of form”, wrote **Agnes de Mille** in her memoirs. And what a poem it has become with the unveiling of the exquisite, one-of-a-kind gowns by **Alexander McQueen** for the *English National Ballet*. My darlings, the extravagance, the colour, the intricate beadwork. One simply can't stop staring. McQueen has made the ballet even more magical, a dazzling mix of theatre and haute couture!
- My other fashion crush? **Monique Lhuillier's** delicate tulle skirts and feather trims that are making **American Ballet Theatre** dancers soar even higher!
- Who needs haute couture when one has **Balmain's** sleek and chic dance wear?! **"The Royal Ballet"** dancers looked spectacular. Their stage presence just glowed with each pirouette.
Around the World:
- The **Royal Swedish Ballet** has returned with its impressive productions of **"La Sylphide"** and **"Giselle."** An exceptional performance from the entire company, which was very warmly received. It certainly shows why Stockholm is one of the best-kept secrets in ballet.
- Speaking of international allure, let's go down south to **The Australian Ballet's** rendition of **"Don Quixote"**. It's a dazzling combination of vibrant energy, graceful movement and a sheer love of storytelling. Absolutely captivating! The company seems to be flying high. Their recent tours have them becoming the most in-demand company on the circuit.
- It is not just the great classical companies who are flourishing! Across Europe and Asia the new wave of independent dance is breathtaking. A veritable explosion of young talent is taking the world by storm. If you are in London I highly recommend a visit to **The Place** and the **Sadlers Wells Theatre**. These two institutions have consistently nurtured a very diverse range of artistic voices!
- For an unconventional night why not go to the **Barbican Centre** in London for the **“The Company"**. They're presenting **"Babel",** which I hear is a fusion of classical and modern techniques. It promises to be a real breath of fresh air.
It truly is a fabulous time to be in the ballet world. The air is alive with energy and creativity, and the sheer diversity is enough to make anyone swoon. This month take some time for yourself to experience the magical world of ballet, and I promise, it will leave you feeling invigorated and refreshed!
