Oh my darlings, the July air is positively humming with the whisper of tutus and the beat of the grand allegro, and my oh my, are we in for a treat! This month, we've got an absolute smorgasbord of ballet happenings, from London to Paris, even to those tantalisingly far-flung shores of the Americas! You can practically smell the sweat of the dancers and the fresh paint of the stage – truly intoxicating!
London Calling!Of course, we wouldn't dream of starting anywhere but London. The heart and soul of our beloved dance world. I simply cannot get over the Royal Opera House this month!
- **"Swan Lake"**: darling, this classic needs no introduction, But I do have a rather delicious bit of gossip, darling. Our own Margot Fonteyn (remember the leg!) made a rather spectacular guest appearance, leaving the entire audience gasping for breath. Simply divine, don't you agree? And speaking of legends, Rudolf Nureyev, oh my! Simply luminous and his partnering with the fair, youthful Alina Cojocaru is absolutely divine, a captivating display of the grand jeté. You will be *entranced!* A most memorable evening indeed, don’t miss it!
- **"Giselle"** - well now, this production is for the connoisseur, and don't even think about pulling out your opera glasses. There's a certain mystique about the way they've staged the Wilis, the sheer ghostly otherworldliness, just makes your pulse race a bit faster. And our Royal Ballet stars, oh, darling! The passion in their performances… they leave you quite breathless.
- **"Manon"**- a delicious French escapade right in the heart of London. Let me tell you, my darlings, you will adore the exquisite costumes (did someone say a bejewelled bodice?!). The ballet, simply heavenly, exuberant, fiery, the whole shebang! It is a joyous, albeit tragic tale! The male dancer was breathtaking! Just the right balance of strength and elegance. But don't tell anybody, darling, but the leading ballerina was just a tad… *uninspired*, don't you agree? Well, never mind. The rest was just utterly magical!
Darling, it's all a bit overwhelming really. Such a lot to take in. And then there's the gorgeous spectacle at the English National Ballet with the premiere of "Romeo and Juliet", with choreography that I wouldn't even dream of attempting in my slippers! You will adore this dance. Oh and I simply can't not mention the stunning backdrops, just perfection!
But you see, dear readers, London isn't the only place on the planet that has a ballet beat! So now, onwards to Paris…
Oh la la! Parisian Delights!Now Paris. I’ve simply *fallen* in love with the new choreography of the legendary Paris Opera Ballet, so fresh and bold.
- **"The Nutcracker"**: Darling, the grandeur! Just incredible, they managed to make it feel fresh and contemporary while still honouring the tradition, which was absolutely delightful! Every scene had the 'je ne sais quoi', even the mice were magnificent!
- **"Swan Lake"** – The Parisian charm oozes out of every pore! Oh and did I mention the divine sets?! Like walking straight into an exquisite watercolour, The sheer magic, the sheer grace and drama in this classic tale. The dancer embodying the role of the prince...divine! Darling, this is the perfect balm to soothe a restless heart and calm the frazzled soul!
Of course, Paris, with its chic cafes, art and oh darling! Don’t forget the shopping - it simply doesn’t compare! What was I saying? Oh right, the ballet! The Parisian company has something called "Le Sacre du Printemps" on offer which has garnered quite the controversy. A certain group claims its 'unorthodox' while others applaud its bold vision. Oh dear! It certainly is a head-turner. I must confess to being quite intrigued.
A Trip Across the Pond!Now then, you wouldn't want to miss out on the New York City Ballet. This legendary troupe never fails to surprise! Always on the cutting edge, these young (and not so young) dancers always manage to inspire and amaze! They are the darlings of the dance world, simply mesmerising.
- **"Agon"** - I know you're all dying to see this masterpiece. The music is divine! And the choreography? Darling, they say this is one of Balanchine's best! And let’s be honest, it is so chic! Oh darling! I cannot resist this show!
- **"Serenade"** - a must-see darling. So classic, it is simply breathtaking, elegant and breathtakingly beautiful! The very best ballet in the whole world!
- **"The Four Temperaments"**- simply the best. It’s raw, elegant, fierce, and absolutely spellbinding, Every time! It's such a bold piece that it will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Oh and don’t even get me started on American Ballet Theatre, a dazzling collection of talent! What's the word for that exquisite dancer with the impeccable physique…and I believe his name starts with M, oh no, B - **Baryshnikov!** Such brilliance.
Around the World in Tutus!Darling, ballet is no longer simply an artistic expression of the West! It's reaching every corner of our beautiful, wondrous planet! This month the Beijing Dance Academy has been enchanting their audience with some of the most captivating classical and modern works And while you're out that way don't forget the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra with the world famous pianist Lang Lang. You really cannot imagine anything more exciting than Lang Lang.
And speaking of 'going big' we must mention our Australian friends, a veritable hive of activity this month ! We absolutely loved the Australian Ballet as they were simply fabulous
- **"Sleeping Beauty"**: with all its glorious traditions and spectacular set design, a visual feast for the eyes! Oh Darling! Do not miss out. Just simply divine!
- **"Cinderella"** – oh you will absolutely adore the costumes, you can’t get a more enchanting tale or more breathtaking show. You really have to see it!
Darling! There is a reason why this art form remains timeless. There is simply something so pure and emotive about ballet! Its beauty transcends language, a shared language that speaks of elegance, strength, and most importantly – passion! So go ahead, find yourself a show and be swept away by the artistry!
