July - A Ballet Month of Exuberance and Finesse
Darlings,
The heat is rising and the summer air is buzzing with excitement. And so it should be! This month in the world of ballet is simply brimming with brilliance. Let’s delve into a month of captivating performances, choreographic innovation, and a veritable smorgasbord of talented dancers!
Paris - A Celebration of French Heritage
Let's begin in the city of love, Paris. I just had to start with the stunning "Giselle," staged at the Palais Garnier by the formidable Paris Opera Ballet. The grandeur of the theatre, coupled with the classic choreography, was nothing short of divine. But darling, it was the ethereal performance of étoile Aurélie Dupont as Giselle that simply captivated. The effortless fluidity, the heartbreaking vulnerability - her portrayal was breathtaking! And then, the sheer virtuosity of Nicolas Le Riche as Albrecht left me in awe. His jetés were simply glorious, his dramatic flair masterful. "Giselle" is, of course, a perennial favourite but this particular performance really left me wanting more, yearning for the next performance!
And just a stones throw away, the Palais Garnier played host to an intriguing exploration of the legendary Marius Petipa, with "The Pharaoh's Daughter" (La Fille du Pharaon). This ballet exudes an almost otherworldly allure with the elaborate sets and opulent costumes by Alexandre Benois, all a dazzling spectacle. It is certainly an impressive exploration of Orientalism and a vibrant showcase of Petipa's innovative genius. The étoile Marie-Agnès Gillot, in the role of Aspicia, did a marvellous job capturing the drama and complexity of this fascinating character. With her expressive movements and the dazzling choreography by Petipa, she drew gasps of delight from the audience!
Across the Atlantic - New York City’s Magnetic Performances
Crossing the Atlantic to the bustling metropolis of New York City, the New York City Ballet has had the audiences enthralled this July. Their ‘Jewels’ performance, a homage to the glittering, multifaceted world of gems, was a feast for the senses. This three-part work by George Balanchine takes us on a mesmerizing journey through musicality, colour and form. The second section, the radiant ‘Emeralds,’ left me dazzled, with its exquisitely balanced composition and the exquisite choreography that showcases the exquisite elegance of the female form. As always, I must commend the incredible talent of the New York City Ballet dancers - they're simply extraordinary!
Russia - A Masterful Blend of Tradition and Innovation
Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet is a company I've adored since I began my dance journey as a young girl. And in this month of captivating performances, they remain one of the world’s most respected and influential ballet companies. Their July schedule has showcased an exciting blend of tradition and innovation, captivating both veteran ballet lovers and newcomers.
A highlight was their staging of “The Sleeping Beauty." As one would expect, this is a treasure trove of breathtaking technical feats and the kind of exquisite costumes one dreams of as a young ballerina. But the Bolshoi's take on this classic ballet also feels remarkably contemporary. The nuanced storytelling of Svetlana Zakharova as Princess Aurora, was simply captivating, and the dynamic power of David Hallberg's Prince Désiré was, dare I say, mesmerising!
Australia's Rising Stars
My travels also took me to Australia, a vibrant cultural hub that is blossoming in the world of ballet. Melbourne has, as always, delivered exceptional ballet performances this month, and a stand-out was the Australian Ballet’s staging of ‘The Nutcracker.' There’s something incredibly magical about watching young dancers bring such an iconic story to life. It's a performance full of innocent charm and childlike wonder. And the dazzling choreography by David McAllister added a fresh contemporary spin to Tchaikovsky’s captivating score, making for a thoroughly engaging performance.
A Season of Enchanting Choreography
The summer months seem to breed innovation, a yearning for something new and exciting, a departure from the familiar. This July saw some wonderfully bold and daring new work.
Here in London, I was fortunate enough to witness a choreographic gem at the Royal Ballet, namely Wayne McGregor's ‘Eden’ - an absolute feast for the eyes. McGregor, the darling of modern dance, is one of the leading lights in contemporary choreography, and ‘Eden’ is testament to that genius. His masterful use of movement and his understanding of the body’s physical limitations are impressive and inspirational, even for a veteran like myself! The dancers themselves brought a new dimension to the work, and I simply had to applaud their talent.
And speaking of talented artists, a performance by The Nederlands Dans Theater at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam also deserves mention. "Sadlers Wells’ "Dance Umbrella’" has a rich history of fostering innovative performance work, and "Sadlers Wells’ Dance Umbrella" is a key player in nurturing this creative energy. Their July program boasted an enthralling show called ‘Second Breath,’ an intriguing, bold and experimental work. One has to be daring in one’s approach in the dance world to truly captivate and impress an audience - and these talented performers achieved just that!
Dance Beyond the Theatre
One final point: ballet is much more than just the traditional stages in opera houses, it’s bursting onto the scene in more contemporary spaces. The streets themselves are a stage, an outdoor platform for dance! And let me tell you, it's a real treat!
Recently in Berlin, a unique open-air ballet performance held on a platform overlooking a shimmering lake caught my eye. Imagine the backdrop, a sweeping panorama of the cityscape with the sun setting as dancers graced the platform. It’s ballet in a whole new context and I adore how it pushes boundaries!
A Season of Grace
Darlings, let us not forget that ballet is a form of art that can move you beyond the physical, a world where grace and artistry can touch your heart.
This month's performance reviews are only a snippet of what's out there, there's so much talent waiting to be discovered! I truly hope that you will join me in supporting the ballet world. It’s an art that requires dedication and courage, a world of artistry that will always hold a place in my heart.
Yours,
Victoria
