My dears, August! The air is thick with anticipation, the season upon us, the scent of jasmine clinging to the warm breeze, and my heart is filled with a yearning for the delicate dance of en pointe grace. A plethora of performances beckon from around the globe, and darling, I wouldn't dream of missing a single one.
We've had a rather scintillating summer, haven't we? Those balmy evenings filled with whispers, laughter, and the clink of champagne flutes. It was quite delightful, wasn't it? But let us not dwell on the past. It is time to return to our true passion. The grand, sweeping stage, the powerful and evocative artistry that defines our souls, the symphony of bodies and emotions.
In July, we saw the shimmering spectacle that is the Paris Opera Ballet’s La Bayadère. It’s a whirlwind of romantic grandeur, filled with swirling colours, decadent costumes and captivating, almost hypnotic, choreography. This ballet is truly an experience. There is an electrifying quality to the Grand Pas de Deux and the opulent choreography of the Kingdom of the Shades that had my head spinning. The dancers, as always, are utterly magnificent. But darling, the leitmotif of the season? The sheer audacity! We must applaud those daring enough to challenge conventions, to ignite new fires of artistry.
London's Royal Ballet - Bold & DramaticLondon's Royal Ballet is always a bastion of tradition, a stronghold of classicism. But this August, darling, they're pushing the envelope. Imagine, they're premiering Wayne McGregor's Infra! I'm told it's a tour de force of innovation, and I'm dying to see what he has concocted. The buzz around the premiere is truly exciting! A breath of fresh air in the stuffy old theatres!
McGregor, that young rascal, is like a whirlwind of whimsy, and a stark contrast to Christopher Wheeldon’s exquisite ballets, and certainly a world apart from Frederick Ashton's exquisite neo-classical pieces, which the Royal Ballet, in a shrewd move, is showcasing this month as a nod to their artistic heritage. Of course, the classics are classics for a reason. And they'll always be a part of who we are.
Moscow’s Bolshoi: Passion, Precision and PurityNow, let’s skip across the Continent. Have you heard? In August, Moscow’s Bolshoi is staging an electrifying revival of Giselle! It’s the quintessential romantic ballet, you know, the tale of innocent love and tragic betrayal. The choreography is simply breathtaking! The soaring leaps, the graceful extensions, the power that these magnificent dancers evoke in a moment is truly astounding. A dance of love and sacrifice, all intertwined with an ethereal purity and depth that will make you sigh.
Of course, the Bolshoi, it's the heart of ballet! It's not just about technical precision. There is a raw intensity that makes them unforgettable, an emotionality that grabs you by the heart, you understand?
If we want a contrast in emotion and artistry, let's jet across the Pacific! A Whimsical Fantasy in Japan
Tokyo’s ballet scene is full of charming quirkiness and a breathtaking attention to detail. Their August programme, oh it's a riot of colours and delicate flourishes! Their new production of Cinderella is simply magical. Not your typical fairy tale. It's so beautifully crafted. It's more of a dream ballet. And the dancing, darling! Oh, it's sublime!
You see, Japan always embraces ballet in a unique, more artistic and ethereal way, and you can see their beautiful sense of whimsy on the stage.
There is so much more happening around the globe! Oh, darling, wouldn’t you love to join me for a tour through the world of dance? To witness the glorious costumes, the exquisite storytelling of ballet and of course, the captivating artistry of the dancers themselves? It would be pure, unadulterated pleasure, wouldn't it?
So grab your opera glasses and get ready for a ballet season filled with vibrant storytelling, technical brilliance and artistic wonder!
