October 2003: A Month of Tutus and Triumphs Darling, what a month it’s been! Paris, New York, even dear old London - it seems the world has been awash with tutus, pirouettes, and a breathtaking level of artistry. Oh, darling, let’s get started. Paris: The City of Love and Lacquer One cannot speak of October without mentioning the *Paris Opera Ballet*, a company that consistently reinforces the city's reputation as a haven for ballet. They unveiled *Le Sacre du Printemps* - I know, such a *classico*! But believe me, they really shook things up. I was simply blown away by their physicality, the power, the precision! The choreography – stark, angular, modern yet so exquisitely crafted – sent shivers down my spine. And the dancers – divine, with a depth of expression I seldom encounter. While we’re in the city of love, let’s not forget *The Parisian Opera Garnier*, with its gilded opulence, was a vision in itself, the perfect backdrop for a ravishing revival of *Swan Lake*. Of course, it’s *de rigueur* to witness the drama of the dual roles, but honestly, I’m far more mesmerized by the pure, delicate beauty of the Swan Queen – such grace! Such tragedy! It was a performance that had me holding my breath, mesmerized by the raw talent on display. New York, New York: The Big Apple of Ballet Speaking of raw talent, darling, let's move on to the *New York City Ballet* - those daring youngsters are bursting with creativity! This month saw them present their new take on *Apollo*, a production infused with a delightful vibrancy. The costumes, darling! Absolutely fabulous! Bold, modern interpretations in shades of scarlet and emerald, they brought an added layer of drama to an already captivating story. Their innovative use of lighting transformed the space, weaving shadows that enhanced the mood and created a sense of captivating mystery. The dancers moved with incredible energy, they were quite literally leaping off the stage - it’s an incredible feat of strength and precision. The highlight of the month though, had to be the *American Ballet Theatre*. The iconic *Giselle* has been reimagined for decades, but what the *ABT* pulled off this month – oh, darling, it was *divine*. The production showcased the extraordinary strength of its dancers and the heart-wrenching, timeless tale of love and betrayal. I gasped at every single move, every plié, every turn – they told the story of Giselle with their bodies, with their expressions – such beautiful artistry! London Calling: Ballet Beyond the Bard Of course, the darling of our theatrical scene, *The Royal Ballet*, always has a way of reminding you why London is truly a ballet capital. Their production of *Cinderella*, though undeniably a classic, had me enthralled with its lavishness, its theatrical flourishes – the costumes were quite fabulous! A whirlwind of color and sparkle, perfectly embodying the magic of the fairytale. The music, darling, simply unforgettable. And the choreography - a perfect blend of classical technique with touches of playful modernity. They danced like they were truly swept up in the magic of it all, drawing the audience into their enchanting world. Of course, I'd be remiss not to mention the wonderful, independent theatre *The Place*, an institution devoted to contemporary ballet, which is, you know, my kind of thing! They showcased some truly experimental choreography, and oh, the risk they take! And the energy – the raw energy! The young, fierce dancers reminded me of myself, you know? These are the talents to watch, I predict great things. Looking Ahead October has been, shall we say, a breathtaking symphony of ballet, darling. But you know what? I already have my eye on November - *The Bolshoi* is making its way to London! Oh, and *Alvin Ailey* will be captivating audiences in New York! Oh my, I can already imagine the stories that will unfold – but I'll be saving those for another review, another day, when I'll tell you all about it, with the utmost enthusiasm, and naturally, my most delightful fashion musings, because of course, the fashion is as crucial to ballet as the moves themselves. Darling, till next time, and keep those pointe shoes polished! You know I adore you.
