Darling, November has been simply divine! With the crispness of autumn air, and the promise of cosy evenings in, there's something in the atmosphere that makes the theatre seem just that bit more enticing. Of course, a bit of glamour never hurts either - and we're certainly not lacking in that department this month, my dears.
Moscow, my Love! Now, I've always adored the Bolshoi - they are just so effortlessly elegant, like a fine, vintage Chanel. And the "Swan Lake" we caught at the Bolshoi was simply exquisite. The dancing was as refined as a Fabergé egg, and the choreography as intricate as a Renaissance tapestry. It was as if each arabesque was crafted with meticulous care and precision, every step a brushstroke in a masterpiece. Now, there's nothing quite as captivating as a graceful ballerina, and Maria Ivanova was a dream, all swan-like elegance and breathtakingly nuanced performance. The stage, with its gilded details and opulent curtains, perfectly complemented the drama unfolding before us. But I confess, it was the sheer emotionality of the piece that stole my breath. The sorrow and longing conveyed through movement were almost tangible, leaving me a blubbering mess (a bit like my usual state, let's be honest). But oh, how we love to feel those raw, emotional currents sweep over us, darling, don't we? I do love a good sob, after all. The only thing missing was a good gossip about the other dancers after the performance - which, my darlings, we all know is the real joy of a night at the theatre, isn't it?
The Bolshoi "Swan Lake"
- Production: Magnificent, truly magnificent. Every aspect, from the costumes to the staging, simply oozes refinement and classical beauty.
- Maria Ivanova: A true star in the making. Her portrayal of Odette/Odile was both technically brilliant and emotionally resonant. This young lady, darling, is one to watch!
- Final thoughts: I may be slightly biased towards the Russians, but let's face it, this performance is simply unforgettable. A perfect night for an evening of cultured beauty and captivating artistry.
Parisian Whimsy: My oh my, how we all love to be whisked away to Paris. And this month, the city of lights offered us a deliciously surreal and avant-garde ballet production of "La Fée d'Argent" at the Palais Garnier. The whole production felt like a glamorous dream – with swirling sets, captivating costumes, and a score that evoked a melancholic charm. It reminded me of a shimmering dream, full of delicate beauty and enchanting touches. Now, darling, the dancers, they were an ensemble of captivating artistry. Their movements were as graceful as wind chimes in the twilight. But what really captured me, what made it truly Parisian, was the overall atmosphere. They somehow managed to capture that intangible, alluring aura that's just so utterly Parisian. That carefree chicness that just makes everything look that little bit more elegant. I, of course, snatched up a copy of the ballet's program as soon as the final bows were done, with its silver foiled cover, it's a beautiful reminder of the night. If only I could have slipped a little piece of the Palais Garnier in my handbag - just to give my little flat a touch of "la vie parisienne", darling.
"La Fée d'Argent" at the Palais Garnier
- Production: A vision of artistic beauty, like an impressionist painting come to life. It was both captivating and beautifully strange.
- Choreography: A mesmerizing whirlwind of fluidity and precision. The intricate footwork and elegant poses held me spellbound.
- Overall: The perfect Parisian ballet - full of charm, artistry, and that intoxicating sense of "joie de vivre." This one will leave you humming the tune long after the lights have gone up.
New York, New York! Let’s take a quick flight across the pond to the vibrant, energetic world of New York. There's something thrilling about the City that Never Sleeps. You just can't beat the energy that bubbles over from this incredible metropolis! And this month, my dear friends, the New York City Ballet put on a stunning revival of Jerome Robbins' "Afternoon of a Faun," one of those classic pieces of American dance, that will leave you breathless. You’d think you’d seen it before, and of course, many of us have in various forms, but, it’s as thrilling as the first time - the simplicity of its concept allows for some incredible freedom in execution by the dancers and we see it completely differently with each viewing.
"Afternoon of a Faun" at the New York City Ballet
- Choreography: An utterly captivating dance masterpiece, beautifully evoking the sensual atmosphere of Debussy’s original music. I never get tired of seeing how gracefully each section interweaves into the whole.
- The Dancers: Oh my, these young things were just electric! So full of passion, power, and grace - and with perfect bodies, darling. Simply mesmerising! You can’t miss this if you find yourself in NYC!
Beyond the Stage: And if you're craving a bit more from the ballet world beyond the actual productions, have a little wander around some of London's art galleries and museums - there's some wonderful things to be discovered this November.
The National Gallery, London: And what an incredible display the National Gallery is currently hosting of Degas’ work! The exhibition is entitled "Degas: Dance, Drawings and Sculpture." And let me tell you darling, you are treated to some captivating displays, highlighting not only the ballet, but how the world of dancers inspired his own artistic development - there are some amazing portraits of the era! His depiction of dancers as both beautiful and graceful, and his capture of their powerful movements was absolutely captivating! It’s a joy to look at those graceful poses, you feel the emotion and energy coming straight through the canvas.
The National Portrait Gallery: This month, I was entranced by the special exhibit featuring some breathtaking portraits of ballerinas from across the globe, showcasing their poise and their delicate beauty!
Victoria & Albert Museum: And as a bonus, darling, they've got this brilliant new display showing the history of the pointe shoe! I couldn’t believe the amazing evolution of the footwear - it’s fascinating! Now I need to buy another pair. Or ten!
And, of course, no night at the ballet is complete without the appropriate outfit! This season darling, let's ditch those dreary colors. It’s time to embrace bold tones! I’ve had my eye on some glorious crimson dresses with flowing fabrics, like you see those wonderful ladies dancing on stage. Don’t forget that little touch of black lace at the hemline to accentuate those beautiful legs!
Until next month darling, enjoy the ballet! And remember to be a good girl and don’t get into too much trouble at the bar!
