Darling, itā€™s June, and as the weather turns glorious and our schedules loosen up, so too does the allure of the arts, especially that divine, fluid art: ballet. Weā€™ve been lucky enough to flit about this spring and let me tell you, there have been some absolute treasures!

Oh, the Places We've Seen, My Dearest...

I found myself swept away to a tiny, bijou theatre in Vienna - The Wiener Staatsoper, the name alone rolls off the tongue like silk, wouldn't you agree? And the ballet was... heavenly. It was an intimate affair, my dear. "Swan Lake" in all its glory but not as the predictable Tchaikovsky, but rather an almost mystical retelling using original compositions. The sheer talent of these Austrian dancers is almost unreal, so incredibly fluid and nuanced. Even the set was ethereal, this kind of diaphanous, dreamlike affair that perfectly suited the moody choreography. Itā€™s hard to put into words, darling, sometimes you just have to see it.

Then there was my jaunt to the Big Apple, for that spectacularly chic American Ballet Theatre, of course! My favourite: the world premiere of the stunning ā€œThe Seven Deadly Sins.ā€ They went all out - a dazzling explosion of neon colour, contemporary music, and, of course, gorgeous, bold choreography. Imagine, seven dancers, one spotlight and each sin takes centre stage, each dancer, beautifully playing their part in a sinfully exquisite drama, culminating in, *sigh*, that final redemption.

Fashionable Feet

But there's no point just discussing the dancing darling, itā€™s all about the shoes! What, you think we ballet folk don't have an eye for fashion? This season's trend? Pointe shoes! Let's face it, ballet flat? Never. But that pink satin, the perfect taperā€¦ they really are quite fabulous. In fact, a few years ago, you would only wear a colour like beige! Scandalous! It's so very much a reflection of the ballet itself, this return to glamour, this feeling of pure, almost innocent, femininity, and just a hint of daring in the sheer silk tights, the barely there tulle. Oh, donā€™t even get me started on the outfits of these young dancers ā€“ sleek, simple and so impossibly chic. Not that there's any need for extravagant accessories, when you have those dancing feet, donā€™t you agree?

  • Paris, Naturally - A stroll down the Champs-ƉlysĆ©es always makes for a fabulous day. And a night spent at the OpĆ©ra Garnier? Just exquisite. And ā€œGiselleā€? It was as if time stood still. Yes, I know, I know. It's a classic, you've probably seen it dozens of times. But seeing it performed at the Garnier with such perfection... it just makes your heart sing.
  • Beyond the Classics - Now, letā€™s not be too old-fashioned darlings, the world is changing, as is ballet! In Moscow, I discovered the Moskovskaya Opera and found myself in a world of breathtaking contemporary choreography that transcended language. A world of humanity and emotion. There's something to be said about this raw talent where movement speaks volumes. No need for words, you just get it. And their costumes - divine! Bold colours, modern cuts that actually move with the body.
  • Backstage Chatter - Of course, a little backstage gossip is a must. Have you heard about that young, oh-so-talented Russian soloist? He's rumored to be joining the Royal Ballet... scandalous! Well, if it wasn't for the dancing, itā€™s worth the buzz. Then there's this new prima ballerina, so petite and sweet but with this wild fire on stage, you'd think she was going to set the stage ablaze!
More Than Just a Ballet

But you know me, darlings, I have an eye for a little drama! What's an exquisite show without a good dose of glamour and intrigue, right? And there's nothing like a bit of theatre, even when the stage lights are dimmed for a silent moment during an act. A few whispered secrets from behind the curtain really spice things up in the most exquisite manner.

  • Moscow's Scandal: It's almost laughable! A backstage rumor, it was the talk of the town... it seems the prima ballerina and the lead dancer of a prominent troupe, well letā€™s just say theyā€™re *rumored* to be more than just dance partners. The whispers start as early as tea time and carry on right up to the end of the show.
  • The Director's Delight: You know, darling, thereā€™s something incredibly sexy about a ballet director who really commands the room. The one in New York, well, he's rumored to have the best dancers on call...and it all comes down to the way he moves! Such energy, such confidence. Heā€™s quite the showman! It makes you wonder what goes on behind the scenesā€¦ the theatre becomes a playground of the arts, darling, an open secret.

A beautiful story well-told is such a captivating thing - it takes us out of ourselves for a while. I think we need a bit more of that, wouldn't you agree? These grand theaters, these exquisite performances - it's just what we all need to rekindle a sense of wonder in our world.
