November, the month of velvets and cashmere, and this year promises to be no different in the world of ballet. With the chill in the air, we all crave warmth and elegance, and these productions perfectly capture that exquisite balance.
Letâs begin with the opulent **Russian State Balletâs production of The Nutcracker**, performed at the grand Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. From the first chime of the music box, the audience was swept away to a whimsical, winter wonderland. As a former prima ballerina, I appreciate the exquisite detail in every aspect, from the perfectly turned-out pointe shoes to the meticulously hand-painted backdrops. There is a palpable electricity in the air whenever Maria Kochetkova takes to the stage; her technical prowess is undeniably brilliant, but it is her innate vulnerability as Clara that makes the role so deeply touching. The sheer beauty of her choreography during the "Snowflake Waltz" left me breathless. One could almost smell the pine needles in the air! The corps de ballet were like sparkling snowflakes, their movement echoing the frosty landscapes and mirroring the elegance of the Snow Queen. I am sure that children who witness this performance will be enchanted, while even seasoned ballet lovers will leave captivated.
Across the pond at the **Royal Opera House in London**, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation before the opening night of **Kenneth MacMillan's Manon**. This passionate and tempestuous ballet always sends shivers down my spine. Tamara Rojo is a force to be reckoned with, bringing a raw vulnerability and raw emotion to the character of Manon. There are moments of heartbreakingly tender choreography in this ballet and I must admit, I shed a tear or two when she danced with her lover Des Grieux. Itâs impossible to watch this ballet without acknowledging the exquisite performances of both Tamara and the dashing Carlos Acosta, who perfectly captures the roguish charm of Des Grieux.
A delightful diversion to a traditional ballet evening comes with **Royal Ballet's "The Sleeping Beauty"**, a production where the beautiful set design takes the spotlight! I am in love with the opulent costumes of the court ladies; they were truly magnificent, the embodiment of fairytale glamour! It reminded me of a particularly exquisite vintage Dior collection.
New York's Lincoln Center**, ever the powerhouse of the arts, has welcomed the illustrious **New York City Ballet** this month, which has been delighting audiences with the timeless beauty of **George Balanchine's "Serenade."** I watched, mesmerised, as the dancers seemed to melt into the music with the ethereal lightness of their movements, their artistry a breathtaking spectacle of athleticism and elegance.
But of course, one doesn't need to travel to London or New York to enjoy a good performance. I made the short trip to the **National Theatre, Manchester**, last weekend to experience **English National Ballet's 'Giselle'**, a story that never fails to move me to my core. Aimee Laoué played the lead role with a breathtaking combination of vulnerability and strength. Her emotional breakdown in the Act 2 is, frankly, breathtakingly executed. The hauntingly beautiful music of Adolphe Adam and the sheer artistry of the Wilis dancers create an experience both haunting and unforgettable.
Now, this wouldnât be a proper review without giving a shoutout to the rising stars of the ballet world! This season's Birmingham Royal Ballet production of "La Fille Mal GardĂ©e"**, directed by David Bintley, was a complete triumph. The sheer talent and raw energy of the younger dancers left me breathless, with particular note given to the exquisite work of Beatrice Carbone as Lise, who showed remarkable maturity, grace and lightness for someone so young.
A ballet experience in the **French countryside**, how heavenly! The annual ballet festival in **Saint-Emilion** always promises an intriguing mix of classical and modern works. This year's festival boasted a powerful rendition of **Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring,"** with a dazzling performance by the Ballet du Rhin, and I'd like to point out their phenomenal dancer, Alexandre Bouillet, for a powerful rendition of the ritual. This is modern ballet at its most gripping and emotional. I always adore the energy of modern ballet â a completely different experience, like watching the art of sculpting with the body. The emotional resonance is so strong, and that is especially powerful for me, a dancer who has lived the passion and the power of ballet. I canât wait to return next year.
A visit to **Moscow** in the autumn was punctuated by a thrilling performance at **Bolshoi Theatre**. I love the **Bolshoi's production of 'Swan Lake'**, a classic in its truest form. This truly embodies everything a classic ballet should be â elegance, drama and effortless grace. It was particularly touching to see the male lead sweep his partner through the air in the final Act; an image I shall not easily forget. I think a trip to **the Bolshoi Theatre** should be on every ballerinaâs bucket list, to soak up the opulence and appreciate a style of ballet truly different from its Western counterpart. Their dancers possess such a remarkable sense of drama and are a joy to behold. Their work at **The Bolshoi** is all about power and grandeur, both physically and artistically.
Of course, one can't end a tour of ballet across the globe without visiting the city of light! It seems Paris always offers something different and breathtaking in the realm of dance. I am absolutely captivated by **the Paris Opera's ballet company,** with a history as fascinating as its current production of **âA Midsummer Nightâs Dreamâ**. The storyâs charm has never failed to enchant, but this production in particular, with a modern and theatrical re-imagining by Wayne McGregor, breathed fresh air into the tale. The delicate, pastel palette of the sets perfectly complemented the whimsical costumes; the sheer spectacle reminded me of a ballet costume competition from the last century. There is such energy and humour to this production â truly a ballet unlike anything you have ever seen. This reimagined production of a beloved classic deserves its own award!
November, like the most graceful of ballerinas, transitions seamlessly from the grandeur of fall into the elegance of winter, and I have been fortunate enough to capture the essence of its grace in a few exquisite ballet performances.
Of course, these are but a few of the captivating performances swirling across the globe. Let me know, darling, where you find your ballet gems this season! Share your ballet experiences with me.
