July 2018: Dance Delights, From Paris to Moscow
Darling, my darlings,
Well, the month of July is here at last and so much is on the cards! It’s hot outside (even London has some summer sun!), and even hotter inside, with fantastic ballets and shows springing up all over the globe, from the glamorous opulence of the Paris Opera to the dazzling audacity of Moscow’s Bolshoi. Oh my, it's almost overwhelming trying to decide what to see! So let me share my latest insights and give you the insider tips on what's simply not to be missed...
Paris, My Darling!
Firstly, of course, we have to start in Paris, that glorious, swirling city of lights. As I sit here in the cafe next to the Opera House, watching the summer crowds wander by in their chic outfits, the atmosphere just crackles with excitement! July's programme here at the Opera House, always a haven of stunning productions and talented dancers, features the magnificent Romeo and Juliet by Prokofiev. This ballet is a perennial favourite and it is a real treat seeing this exquisite, yet sometimes heartbreaking, tale unfold on stage with the choreography that Prokofiev intended.
The new soloist in the role of Juliet is divine – I confess, my darlings, her grace reminded me of myself when I was younger, such pure beauty and such breathtaking, controlled emotion! In the role of Romeo, a new talent – the strong, but graceful, Etienne – brings the impetuous love story alive, a delicious mix of elegance and masculine vigour.
For the full Parisian experience, do enjoy a picnic beforehand in the Jardin des Tuileries - always perfect for people watching (don't worry, you'll always spot someone fabulous to give your nod of approval). And when the curtains fall at the Palais Garnier, be sure to join the throng for a post-ballet supper at Restaurant Guy Savoy. Simply divine!
Beyond The Eiffel Tower...
While Paris, darling, will always be Paris, you absolutely MUST journey further afield to witness the spectacle of international ballet this month.
Russian Ballet, Where the Heart Beats Faster
Of course, Russia is calling this summer, my darlings! The Bolshoi is, well, the Bolshoi, where the legendary talent and passion never cease to amaze. You may wish to take in a performance of their acclaimed version of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake - this really is ballet in its most pure and exciting form! There’s a reason why The Bolshoi remains a world-famous jewel, offering the grand tradition, unrivalled artistry, and exhilarating performance. And it goes without saying that it will be packed!
My advice: be sure to book in advance (those Russian ballerinas are simply phenomenal) and wear a stunning cocktail dress! There’s no time to be shy when experiencing the grandeur of Moscow.
If Moscow is a bit too much of a commitment for you (though I urge you to push past that little voice of doubt in your head - it's absolutely worth it!), I urge you to explore some of the hidden gems around the world!
From Australia to America: A Tour of the Ballet World
Darling, I always try to sneak in a few smaller, more intimate venues whenever I can. They’re a real treasure – you find something so unique, often unexpected. Australia has some gorgeous ballet offerings, with the Sydney Dance Company renowned for its modern style and a vibrant sense of the modern. If you're feeling adventurous and looking for something a bit different, this could be the perfect escape.
If the idea of a long haul to the South Pacific is daunting (though, it would be delightful!), consider venturing to the Americas - the artistic scene there is brimming with new energy and dynamic, edgy productions.
The New Wave
From the sleek choreography of the New York City Ballet to the eclectic offerings of the American Ballet Theatre, New York is, naturally, brimming with talent, so take your time and explore! This summer, you'll find the world famous dancers on full display as they perform classics and reinterpretations alike, from "The Nutcracker" to original work by rising stars. New York City Ballet is, of course, known for their incredible performances of Balanchine - that dynamic precision and elegant beauty! They have several of the famous works in the repertoire, such as the ethereal "Symphony in C," and their "Agon." Both of these will stay with you for a long, long time. But, of course, darling, New York never sleeps, and so the experimental, edgy pieces can be seen at companies like The Ailey School or Steps on Broadway.
Something For Everyone
With the ballet season in full swing, there's something to suit every taste, darling, and no shortage of glamorous evenings on the dance floor!
And, of course, remember your dancing essentials:
- Always have a pair of opera glasses in your clutch! (Be sure they're beautifully crafted to compliment your gown! I just love crystal, myself)
- A silk scarf is indispensable. The cool, ethereal feel of silk and the light it brings will always accent your beauty!
- Be sure to have at least three gorgeous, elegant gowns in your suitcase. For a more casual ballet outing, a striking but simple skirt or even chic separates would do! Remember, darling, we dancers, no matter our age, should always try to inspire awe!
Let me know what you think! Where will your dancing journey take you?
With a twirl and a smile,
Your Ballet Diva.
