Oh my darlings, June has finally arrived! The sun is out, the air is alive with the promise of long, glorious evenings, and the world of ballet is absolutely brimming with exciting events. As ever, I’ve been scouring the globe, indulging in a delightful whirlwind of dance performances, and let me tell you, the current scene is absolutely divine!

A Parisian Dream

My trip to Paris this month was an absolute must. Let’s face it, darling, no dance journey is complete without a little dose of Parisian elegance. This time, I treated myself to a captivating evening at the Opéra Garnier. The grandeur of the building, the shimmering chandeliers, and the hushed anticipation of the audience - pure perfection! The piece I saw was a revival of "Giselle," and while this classic is always a delight, I was particularly impressed with the principal dancer's interpretation. Such breathtaking artistry! The way she captured the sorrow and fragility of Giselle, the raw emotion that coursed through her every step, it simply left me speechless. You know how I feel about those exquisite tutus, and this one was an absolute masterpiece. Delicate, ethereal, a perfect balance of romance and tradition. It truly was an unforgettable evening.

London Calling

My next stop was London, a city that never fails to thrill and inspire. This month, I was particularly eager to see "The Winter's Tale" at the Royal Ballet. The company is, of course, a force to be reckoned with, and this production didn't disappoint. A truly beautiful blend of classic ballet and contemporary movement, all underscored by an exceptional score. The choreography, a testament to the masterful artistry of Christopher Wheeldon, beautifully translated Shakespeare's complex themes of love, betrayal, and reconciliation. And, darling, the costumes were quite simply stunning. Such incredible detail, an abundance of exquisite fabrics and textures. There was a breathtaking gown on the principal ballerina, with swirling fabrics in hues of emerald green and sapphire blue. It moved with her like a whispered dream.

New York's Electrifying Pulse

Next, it was across the pond to New York City, the epicentre of American dance. Here, the scene is always vibrant and exciting, brimming with an almost palpable energy. I spent a few wonderful days soaking up the city's cultural landscape, taking in a performance by the New York City Ballet. The program featured a mixed repertoire, which is always such a wonderful experience, as it allows for a truly varied evening of artistry. One piece in particular, "Agon," captured my attention. The movement was captivatingly complex, with angular lines and sharp accents that gave it an undeniable edge. It was a refreshing reminder of ballet’s dynamic, innovative potential. My heart always skips a beat when I hear Stravinsky. It has that unmistakably modern quality, full of drive and force, so utterly captivating.

A Whimsical Stroll in Berlin

Finally, my whirlwind tour ended in Berlin, a city known for its cultural vibrancy. My time here was spent immersed in a captivating production by the Staatsballett Berlin, a ballet company that has steadily gained a reputation for its innovation and exceptional talent. I found myself particularly enthralled with their interpretation of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." This was truly a remarkable piece, weaving together the classic story with inventive choreography that captured the absurdity and wonder of Lewis Carroll’s imagination. The choreography, bursting with imaginative imagery, captured the essence of both whimsical wonder and the sinister side of Wonderland. And let's not forget the costumes, a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and playful designs, perfect for conjuring the magic of this timeless tale.

A Dance Extravaganza

But June isn't just about major city venues. The international dance scene is bursting with talent, from grand opera houses to smaller independent theatres. From the captivating “Swan Lake" with its stunning sets and intricate choreography at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg to the bold and energetic "Le Sacre du Printemps" by the English National Ballet in London, there’s a performance to suit every taste.

This month, I’m particularly smitten with the rise of young, innovative choreographers. These new voices are pushing the boundaries of ballet, exploring themes of identity, gender, and social issues in truly compelling ways. One of my current favourites is William Forsythe. He masterfully combines traditional ballet techniques with cutting-edge contemporary styles, challenging the conventional boundaries of dance and offering a fascinating commentary on modern life.

A Must-See: "Cinderella" in Rome

Speaking of innovative takes on classics, I simply must tell you about the most captivating “Cinderella" I’ve ever witnessed. The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, oh my darlings, they put on a spectacular! I swear the costumes seemed to dance as much as the ballerinas. You must try to catch this before it’s gone. It’s more than just a dance production; it’s an unforgettable experience.

A Bit of Romance for Your Dance Calendar

Whether it's a grand classic or a groundbreaking contemporary work, June is an extraordinary time to lose yourself in the enchantment of ballet. It's the month where every graceful leap, every delicate pirouette, speaks to a longing for connection, for expression, for stories spun from imagination and passion. Take the opportunity to explore, be moved, and immerse yourself in this enchanting art form. Remember, darlings, a touch of ballet is the perfect cure for a dull summer evening. I leave you now to prepare your perfect evening. Be sure to include an exquisite cocktail and, of course, your favourite dance shoes. After all, there's no denying the captivating allure of a dance night.
