My darlings, it's that time of year again - April - the month of showers, and let's be honest, quite a lot of show-ers too, shall we say. The world's ballet companies are in full bloom, with a spectacular selection of productions for discerning dancers, such as yourselves, to enjoy. Here are just a few highlights from my international diary: * Royal Ballet, London: As I'm sure you're all well aware, my darling friends, April sees the Royal Ballet's grand opening of a brand new ballet called "Bloom." My old friend and long-time collaborator, Christopher Wheeldon, is a visionary choreographer, and "Bloom" is rumored to be something quite spectacular indeed - floral designs, vibrant colors, and even a touch of theatricality! I wouldn't miss it if I were you, and trust me, a bit of ballet and a jaunt to the Royal Opera House is just what the doctor ordered! Remember to get there early, for the Royal Ballet's openings always have a delightful champagne and caviar reception. * The Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow: Ah, the Bolshoi. There's just something about that glorious Russian tradition. You won't find me at the Royal Ballet for this one, as I'm heading over to the Motherland. I must confess, the company is on the decline these days, in terms of its exquisite precision and traditional, unfussy style. Yet, I've heard they're premiering a contemporary ballet by a young, upcoming Parisian choreographer. He has quite the following in the city of lights. Well, he certainly doesn't disappoint in my book. * San Francisco Ballet: The City by the Bay, and it's always full of surprises. In April, San Francisco Ballet is celebrating a season of French repertoire, featuring a very rare performance of the "Carnaval" - by Erik Satie - it's full of exuberance, romance and all the French charm one can hope for in an evening out. Then there's the pièce de résistance, **Balanchine's Jewels**. You must understand, Jewels is truly an iconic and very, very rare treat - it's just breathtaking! **April - a feast of Ballet!** Now, don't get me wrong, my dears. It's not all about the glamour and the spectacle (though it helps to add that special touch). This year, there's something for everyone, no matter their taste or penchant for style. It's all about finding a ballet that resonates with your personal story - yes, you! It might be a little dramatic, or perhaps just an evening of refined beauty - or a chance to relive your youthful dreams on stage. But where do you find your "perfect" ballet? Well, it's a little secret: you follow your intuition. You trust your gut feeling. So let me help you along with a little guide to this month's "Must-See" performances: * **For the dramatic soul** * The Royal Opera House's presentation of **"Swan Lake"** - just about every performance is always sold out, but try and find tickets. You can't go wrong with Swan Lake! If you haven't already witnessed the magic of the Royal Ballet dancers bringing Tchaikovsky's iconic score to life, then put it at the top of your "must do list" in your ballet diaries. * Or try the **English National Ballet's staging of **"Giselle"**- The quintessential tragic love story that will have you sobbing! The "Giselle" at The Coliseum is absolutely breathtaking, don't you know. * **For the passionate devotee of contemporary ballet:** * The Royal Ballet's production of **"Woolf Works"** - now this is something special - a modern interpretation of the writer Virginia Woolf. Be warned it can be a bit on the heavy side. The dance will have you questioning and contemplating, I guarantee it! But if that's your taste, it's for you. * **"The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude"**- a daring and dramatic show performed by the New York City Ballet. Just seeing the promotional pictures gave me the chills. * The American Ballet Theatre will perform **"The Dream"** which is a dreamlike piece based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream. I can't think of anything more heavenly for the dance lover. * **For the traditionalist and romantic** * The Australian Ballet in Melbourne. For my friends who love tradition, the Australian Ballet offers some of the most authentic and exquisite performances of **"The Sleeping Beauty"**. * The Bolshoi's **"La Bayadère"** - ah yes, this traditional Indian tale of love, devotion, and sacrifice - all of these intertwined, as the tale of "The Temple Dancer" unravels. Don't you agree? A bit dramatic? Just the right dose! But let's be real, if you like grand spectacle and opulent costumes this one is your chance! * The English National Ballet are showcasing **"Coppelia"**- a truly joyous performance of wit and laughter! This should certainly appeal to all those looking for lightheartedness! You know, as a ballerina, even I enjoy a lighter show. **Where to get your tickets:** There you have it my darlings - an appetizing, or shall I say, a tantalising mix of Ballet this April. I can guarantee there's a ballet for every palate and passion this April! Now, remember to get your tickets well in advance - these performances tend to sell out quickly - so do your homework my darlings - book, book, book!
