Tutu Tuesday #532: A Blast from the Past, or Should I Say the Past?!

Greetings, my dearest tutu-loving darlings!

It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad blogger, Emma, here, bringing you another delectable dose of tutu history! Today, we're taking a little trip down memory lane (on a luxurious first-class carriage, of course!), to March 8th, 1842, a date that, believe it or not, is chock-full of tutu-related goodness!

Now, imagine, if you will, bustling through the streets of London. We're not in a modern theatre district, but amidst cobblestone streets, with horse-drawn carriages jostling for space and the scent of freshly baked bread in the air. The air is a cacophony of bustling, chatter, and laughter - the kind of happy hum that only London can offer!

My lovely darlings, as you all know, the tutu has an incredibly long and glamorous history! It has evolved over the years, shedding layers and showing off more and more of the ballerina's lovely legs. (And, if I might say so myself, legs are a gift!) But let's rewind our history lessons back to the year 1842. Our beloved tutu was not yet in its ultra-short, wispy form – that wouldn't arrive for a few more years! Back in 1842, our ladies of the ballet graced the stage with a slightly more "fluffy" version, the romantic tutu.

Imagine flowing layers of tulle and delicate lace cascading over a petticoat, a delicate mist of feminine elegance. These beauties, so ethereal and graceful, captured the spirit of the Romantic era in all their splendor. And the highlight of that year? The creation of a revolutionary new tutu by **Marie Taglioni! (You see, history just knows how to be so utterly dramatic and exciting! I mean, could it be anything less?!)

The world went wild over the "La Sylphide" tutu, so light and airy it barely seemed real. They were calling her “Queen of the Fairies”, and it's clear to see why! Marie, a pioneer of the romantic ballet, had a unique ability to transcend earthly boundaries and grace us with magical displays of ballet art.

And now, my darlings, I’m going to let you in on a little secret… My upcoming performance (and it's a secret until now!) in Derbyshire is an adaptation of "La Sylphide"! How incredible is that? And don’t you worry, my little tutu angels, I’ll be sporting a lovely romantic tutu inspired by the very style Marie Taglioni made famous. It’s going to be positively enchanting.

Now, enough about my excitement – let's jump back to the date we're discussing, March 8th, 1842. On this date, a new fashion trend began sweeping the London scene: The waltz! You might be saying to yourself, “What's a waltz? I only know modern dance music, Emma!” But before there were electric guitars and pounding beats, there was beautiful waltz music, and this was truly all the rage! People, men and women, dressed in their finest attire to join in the swirling dance, making for a truly beautiful sight to behold!

Can you imagine, ladies, how the waltzing dresses would have flowed with the music?! Imagine all that tulle, a romantic swish with every turn and sway! This enchanting form of dance (especially those beautiful sways!) is a real tribute to the grace of a ballerina. And what did men wear to dance with these charming ladies, you may be wondering? They looked sharp in their best suits, sporting silk top hats and sleek gloves! Talk about sophisticated.

The waltzing dance craze certainly gave a boost to the world of fashion. Now, I wouldn't be Emma if I didn't say a little something about this new fashion, right? Ladies, imagine the wonderful outfits these dancing ladies wore!

Think romantic flowing dresses, soft colours like lavender and baby pink (you know how much I adore pink!), perhaps a touch of silk, maybe a bit of lace, with dainty bouquets of flowers tucked in their hair. It must have been an elegant affair, wouldn't you agree?

This exciting, fashionable era was so incredibly vibrant, so inspiring! I even have my own "waltzing" choreography for this upcoming performance. We all love the dance moves we can perform with our pink tutus, don't we?! I simply must be there, to experience those waltzing dances and to see the beautiful costumes that will grace the stage. I mean, even just imagining them makes me so excited for fashion!

My dear tutu lovers, there is so much more I'd love to tell you! The world of tutus is ever-evolving, brimming with history, style, and incredible art. If you find this kind of information exciting too, let me know what other aspects of the history of the tutu you'd love to explore! We'll cover it all, from ancient Greek dancing to modern contemporary ballet, no matter the length, colour, or era! Just tell me your wishes, and voila! Magic happens!
