#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 15th March 1842 🩰💖
Hello lovelies! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet dedicated to all things pink, fluffy, and pirouette-worthy. Today marks post number 533 on my journey through the fascinating history of the ballet tutu, and we're heading back to a particularly exciting year - 1842!
It feels a little bit surreal, hopping off the train and finding myself in the heart of Paris, the city where ballet is practically in the air you breathe. The cobblestones are echoing with the music of dancing feet, the scent of fresh croissants wafts from every bakery, and everywhere I look, I see the most delightful Parisian ladies clad in the most exquisite fashions. This is where the true story of the ballet tutu begins, and trust me, darling, it's a story full of charm, a dash of drama, and more sparkles than you can imagine!
Now, 15th March 1842. Where to begin? Well, darling, this date holds a very special place in our ballet history books. It was the very same day that the iconic ballet, Giselle, had its world premiere. Oh my! It's absolutely fabulous! And this masterpiece, darlings, is crucial for understanding the evolution of the tutu. You see, in the Giselle world, the romantic tutu, a marvel of airy tulle, was making its debut. Gone were the heavy, cumbersome skirts of previous generations, replaced by layers of delicate netting that moved like a whispered dream. Imagine a puff of airy tulle swirling with every step, with a whisper of a story woven in each twirl! This new look truly gave the dancers the freedom to express themselves and, my darlings, the results were spectacular!
This "romantic" tutu became a ballet darling practically overnight! Its design was all about capturing the ethereal spirit of the dancer, emphasising grace and delicacy, creating a vision of lightness and airy beauty that captivated everyone, from royalty to humble streetwalkers. The layers of tulle, the romantic ruffles at the hem, and that signature pointed shape – all designed to celebrate the feminine form. How divine!
Now, for this trip, I was in desperate need of some fabulous, frilly inspiration for my own tutus! And honestly, darling, walking around the streets of Paris, surrounded by the most beautiful fabric shops and exquisite millinery, was like a dream. You could smell the inspiration in the air! This is where I found the perfect shop, with a tiny sign above its door: "La Boutique de la Ballerine" - "The Ballerina's Shop"! It's like stepping back in time! Rows and rows of vibrant colours, luxurious fabrics, and glittering embellishments - everything you could possibly want for creating a bespoke, vintage-inspired tutu, perfect for a true romantic ballet enthusiast. They've even got the most exquisite tulle - so fine you can practically see right through it, a cloud of sheer femininity, if you will.
I picked up a little bit of everything – delicate tulle in the softest blush, a little ribbon in a vintage rose colour for accents, a few sprigs of pale lavender for a touch of magic, and, of course, some gorgeous silk flowers to embellish my dream creation. It took hours, but after a glass of sparkling wine and some playful music from the cafe across the street, I was ready to go! You can already see it in my mind's eye, the creation I’m about to whip up. Oh, the fun of fashioning my own tutu. Do you like my ideas, my loves? I’ll let you see my creations when I’m back!
And talking about creations, imagine my surprise when I heard that the designer Charles Frederick Worth was presenting a whole collection inspired by Giselle! Oh, the grandeur, the drama! Worth used those same delicate tulles and ethereal colours that captured the essence of the ballet, and infused it into elegant gowns for the most fashionable women in Paris! It was all about light, romantic details – cascading tiers, flowing silhouettes, and whimsical embellishments. The ballet was truly influencing everything, including the fashion on the streets!
This era was about expressing the soul, you see. And that romantic, dreamy style was certainly a hot trend on the Parisian fashion scene. The ballet inspired everything – dresses, hair, even jewelry! And speaking of the hair, a Parisian ballerina showed me how to style my own locks. We went for a delicate chignon, darling. And we’re talking tiny braids woven around the bun. A single, delicate feather adorned my hair - my perfect ballet bun accessory!
Oh my, the Parisian spirit is so alive here! You can almost feel the whispers of creative genius, the anticipation of something exciting happening, the thrill of a revolution in dance! We're at the dawn of a new era, my dear, an era where movement takes center stage, where elegance is paramount, and where, I must admit, a good, pink tutu always steals the show!
Now, darling, I must leave you for now, for my train departs this afternoon for London. I have an evening of ballet at Covent Garden to enjoy, a fabulous silk scarf to buy on the Strand, and of course, my latest tutu creation needs its final touch, a spritz of magic, a pinch of grace, a dash of confidence.
Remember, darlings, embrace your inner ballerina, wear a pink tutu and celebrate life’s beautiful, intricate details!
See you all next #TutuTuesday! And don’t forget to share your own pink tutu adventures with me on www.pink-tutu.com.
Love,
Emma xoxo
