#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: The Dawn of a Dream!

Post 647

Hello, lovelies! It’s Emma here, your very own Tutu Time Traveller, and this week I’ve journeyed back to a fascinating time: May 21st, 1844. Oh, it was simply bursting with beauty and excitement! Imagine, this was the very week that the Ballet Imperial, the ultimate dance extravaganza, debuted in London! Talk about a feather in your dance cap!

London Calling

We all know how much I adore the magic of London. The shops are teeming with exquisite gowns and silks. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane is overflowing with fashionable ladies, their faces aglow with excitement for the new ballet. Did I tell you, I've finally discovered the most divine pink velvet dress at The Court Milliner and Dressmaker! Imagine a perfect Parisian rose in a swirl of beautiful silk - I think it was made for me!

*The Debut of "La Sylphide" *

And then, of course, the magnificent "La Sylphide", a breathtaking dance performance, created by none other than the visionary August Bournonville! You’ll simply be delighted to learn that the ballet's exquisite costumes played a key role in the magical ambiance. And my, what lovely tutus! While they weren't quite the full, billowing tulle marvels we know and love today, the skirts were becoming fuller and airier, reaching just past the ankles, perfectly designed to let those nimble ballerina feet work their magic.

Inspiration Everywhere!

You can tell I’m inspired, darlings! Just look at all those fluttering silk, cotton and lace petticoats, beautifully arranged to achieve a perfectly light, airy feel! Oh, and imagine this! In 1844, dancers were beginning to wear shoes specifically designed for ballet. They had leather soles, allowing them to glide effortlessly on the stage. A total breakthrough, don't you think?

Travel Back in Time With Me!

Let's rewind a little. I found that back in the late 1700s, our ballerinas were still donning dresses. They weren't exactly "tutu-fied" yet, more of a skirt worn with tights! However, that changed quickly, dear readers, thanks to the incredible invention of the crinoline! Imagine - suddenly there was room to dance, to float, to twirl, with a graceful flourish. And then, the iconic ballerina silhouette began to take shape. Just wait until you see the glorious pink tutu transformation I’ve got planned for my next time-hopping adventure!

A Parisian Promenade

Before I forget, have I mentioned how excited I am to hop on the train to Paris for next month's performance? Oh my, what fabulous creations are awaiting me there! The dancers are all sporting beautiful lace, chiffon and silk, perfect for graceful movements. I can just see the breathtaking colour combinations and flowing lines that will set my imagination alight!

*Let’s Celebrate the Tutu, Always! *

I know it can be hard to get excited about history when we are living in such a modern world. But trust me, lovelies, this history is important to us. It helps us appreciate the journey we’ve all been on. Our favourite fashion and design icons draw on that rich history every single day! So, let’s make this #TutuTuesday a tribute to the wonderful history of our tutu's - to the evolution of a true symbol of grace, beauty, and artistic expression!
