#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Through 1844! (Post #648)

Bonjour, darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu aficionado, bringing you another sparkling edition of #TutuTuesday, taking us on a time-hopping adventure through the glorious history of the ballet tutu. Grab your favourite shade of pink, pour yourself a cuppa, and let's waltz back to… well, 28th May, 1844, to be precise!

Now, you might be thinking, "1844? Tut-tut, Emma, no pink tutus then!" And you'd be absolutely right. Those glorious frothy wonders of tulle hadn't yet graced the stage. But fear not, my lovelies, for this is where our time travel journey gets exciting!

Back in 1844, ballet was a grand affair. Think elaborate costumes, flowing silks, and the dramatic pantomimes of the time. And just as the French Impressionists were capturing light and colour on canvas, so too were ballet dancers, especially those in the glittering heart of Paris, seeking to capture the fleeting movements of their art in new, innovative ways.

But before we can properly understand the tutu's story, we need to know where we're going:

Our Time Machine Destination: La Scala, Milan

Milan, Italy. Oh, the romance of it! Today is a special day because tonight, The Pharaoh’s Daughter, a fantastical, two-act ballet in a dazzlingly lavish setting, makes its premiere at the world-renowned La Scala Opera House. It’s going to be a sight to behold, with ornate costumes, swirling dances, and oh-so-much grandeur. Can you imagine, darling, the whisper of the silk costumes as the dancers gracefully take the stage? Imagine, just imagine.

La Scala and The Birth of The Ballerina

This iconic theatre is an integral part of our #TutuTuesday adventure. Milan, you see, was the beating heart of La Ballerina, that exquisite creature of artistry and elegance, a woman unbound, floating in graceful movement. The first truly dramatic ballet performances were showcased right here! Think extravagant, theatrical storytelling with a dazzling dose of grace and lightness that left the audience speechless!

So, even if we don't see tutus on this date, this is a period of significant development. A period when dancers began to embrace a sense of movement and expressiveness. Imagine them, liberated from the restrictions of crinolines and full skirts, using their legs and feet to narrate tales of fantasy and passion. A revolution, really, for the world of ballet!

What are You Wearing Emma?

Tonight, I've donned my own little tribute to La Scala - a powder pink tutu, naturally, paired with a shimmering silver sequined bodice that speaks of Milan's fashion heritage. It's a touch of elegance and whimsicality in tribute to the artistry I’m about to witness. Plus, this tutu is perfect for hopping on the train, it's practically a dream to wear for travelling!

On The Shopping Front:

This week's trip to Milan is so good for my wardrobe! You know, when we're talking history and ballet, it's just essential to discover all those iconic fashion details. I am a bit in love with these divine satin gowns, adorned with elaborate floral designs, that are the ultimate tutu-approved for a formal evening. But, honestly, anything from this era - the flowing lines of silk, the gentle flutter of lace... pure artistry! The craftsmanship in this period is just phenomenal.

Speaking of craftsmanship, have you visited my new shop online yet? It's filled with the prettiest things! Stay Tuned Next Week!

As we leave La Scala tonight, the energy of this moment, the energy of those dancers pushing the boundaries of expression, will forever stay with us.

I'm off on my grand ballet adventure now, darling. But stay tuned, as we're diving even deeper into the world of ballet and those precious tutus. Join me next #TutuTuesday, and we'll explore the era where tutus began to take their dramatic shape - it’s a revolution in fashion waiting to happen!

Yours in tutus and sequins, Emma
