#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - January 27th 1846 🩰
Welcome, my darling darlings, to post number 735 of the *Pink-Tutu.com #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History blog!* I’m Emma, your time-travelling, tutu-obsessed guide to the wonderful world of ballet fashion! I’m always eager to bring you the latest and greatest tutu gossip, whether from the royal courts of Europe or the vibrant boulevards of Paris. Today, my dears, we journey back to January 27th 1846. Now, put on your most whimsical pink tutu and join me!
Let’s whisk ourselves back to a time where ballet was starting to bloom like a rose in a sun-kissed garden. In London, the majestic Royal Opera House, Covent Garden was buzzing with life, and the French fashion of the time was beginning to be absorbed by the English elite. The crinolines - the enormous, bell-shaped skirts worn by ladies - were still all the rage. Now imagine the silhouette: the elegant sweep of a voluminous crinolined gown contrasting beautifully with the soft, graceful movements of ballerinas onstage. Talk about a captivating vision!
I have to admit, while I’m besotted with tutus, a crinoline, in its grandness and swish, could make even the most committed tutu enthusiast gasp with appreciation. These enormous gowns, like shimmering clouds on a beautiful woman, took the art of dressing to a new level of elaborate elegance.
On this very day, January 27th, 1846, a piece of ballet history was etched into the Parisian theatre world - the first ever public performance of "Giselle," an iconic ballet composed by the legendary Adolphe Adam. Ah, Giselle! The story of a heartbroken country girl who loses her sanity when she is betrayed by her beloved is one of the most poignant in ballet. Imagine the swirling romance of Giselle, a beautiful young girl dancing through the forest, her crinoline adding a mesmerizing grandeur to the steps she performed! The audience in Paris that night were enthralled, and the impact of “Giselle” was felt worldwide. Even in Derbyshire, my beautiful, countryside home, news travelled quickly through the air - though a train journey in those days, darling, could take hours!
But we’re all about tutus here at Pink-Tutu.com, and so the focus remains on those fluttering delights. Now, 1846 may have been a time of full-skirted crinolines, but a glimpse of tutu history can still be seen - the graceful silhouette, the floating skirts, all hinting at what the future held! Imagine the stage, with delicate tulle floating, a dreamy wisp against the grand grandeur of a swirling crinoline gown - that is the inspiration of our journey to tutus! It’s all part of the elegant story, the ever-evolving history of the beautiful dance.
You see, darling, it wasn’t always just pink tutus, at least not on stage. The history of ballet tells a wonderful story - of experimentation, of shifting styles, of dramatic contrasts between the flowing grandeur of a crinoline and the elegance of a diaphanous tulle skirt. The very beginning of tutu’s tale is intertwined with “la danse,” the flowing dance, where it was less about the costume and more about expressing the passion and drama of a story, and ah, the stories - of lovers, of queens, of fairies and princes - always captivate the audience. And through that captivation, through that emotional journey that we embark upon while we watch, we are taken into another world where anything can happen!
I often imagine myself stepping out onto the stage in one of those grand crinoline gowns, swirling and dipping with graceful moves. Imagine that elegance on the stage of Covent Garden, or at a glorious gala in a palace. But there is something so thrilling about the lightness of a tutu! It’s a dance of movement, of flight. Like a delicate butterfly flitting amongst roses! So exquisite! So delicate! And you know what? There is something inherently beautiful about a girl in a tutu.
Just imagine yourself, darling, walking down a busy Parisian street, in your own magnificent pink tutu, a cloud of shimmering fabric catching the eye. You are transforming the world, one pink tutu at a time!*
