#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Peek into the 1847 Debut!

Greetings, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your very own time-travelling tutu-clad blogger, back with another installment of #TutuTuesday! Today, we're going all the way back to June 1st, 1847, to a time when ballet tutus were still finding their footing – or rather, their piqué! 🩰

Now, I may be a self-proclaimed pink-tutu queen, but even I admit things weren’t always so sparkly! Imagine, a world where dancers wore bulky, multi-layered skirts, making pirouettes a real challenge (and I mean real challenge – imagine those skirts getting tangled during an arabesque!).

Luckily for us, the year 1847 saw the debut of a new ballet skirt – a creation called the "tutu" by Maria Taglioni. Voilà! The dancer could move freely! This breakthrough ushered in a new era of artistry and athleticism – something we all can appreciate, wouldn’t you agree? 💖

I was so excited to hop on a train, courtesy of the proceeds from my last ballet performance (of course, I had to don my favourite pink tutu – couldn't go without it!), to London! Why London? Well, imagine the buzz! This city was THE center of ballet in those days, teeming with excitement and creativity.

You wouldn't believe the theatre buzz, darling! I popped in to watch a ballet at Covent Garden, where the tutus were already catching on. A sea of tulle! You know me, I simply had to go shopping after! London was like a wonderland of fabrics, from the lightest gauze to the finest silk. Every shop I entered had some kind of tulle, it was all the rage!

Even in 1847, London was a fashion hot spot. Everyone, from the aristocracy to the theatre crowd, seemed eager to get a glimpse of the latest trends. You know I’ve always been a fan of the statement look! And that’s where the tutu made its grand entrance!

It was so elegant and exciting! I couldn’t wait to slip into my own pink tutu! It was pink, my dearest readers, pink! Well, alright, it wasn’t the same colour pink as we see today. But believe me, for that era, a delicate blush colour was quite the trend!

While it's no frilly, bouncy tutu we see today (remember, fashion has evolved and grown), that 1847 debut marked a defining moment for ballet.

And guess what? I'm off to another adventure! (Yes, with a new pink tutu, of course – always got to keep up with fashion trends!). But before I disappear back in time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this historical ballet breakthrough. Do you love tutus as much as I do? Let me know!

Remember to keep your eyes peeled on this space for more exciting tutu adventures! And stay fashionable until next time! 💖

Yours in tulle, Emma
