#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 18th September 1855 (Post #1238)
Hello darlings! Itās Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, ready to take you on another whirlwind tour through the fascinating history of the tutu! This week, weāre venturing back to 18th September 1855. Now, you might be thinking, āEmma, thatās a long time ago, what could possibly be exciting about tutus in 1855?!ā But trust me, my dears, this date marks a significant moment in the evolution of ballet, a time when the tutu, as we know it, truly began to blossom.
Before I dive into the glorious history, Iām so excited to tell you about the utterly divine performance I saw last night! Iām in Paris, and last night, the ballet was pure magic. You wouldnāt believe the opulence - the costumes, the stage, the incredible talent on display - oh, my darling, it was simply breath-taking! Youāll see photos in my latest post on www.pink-tutu.com, but trust me, photos cannot do it justice! After the show, I popped into a charming little boutique on the Rue de Rivoli - the tutus there were so fabulous! And, youāll never believe, I stumbled upon the most stunning pink feather boa. Naturally, I couldnāt resist!
Speaking of feather boas, we have a little history to catch up on. Itās 1855, the height of the Romantic Era in ballet, and imagine my excitement - this was a time when tutus became utterly enchanting. Yes, before this point, ballerinas had been clad in long skirts, rather limiting in their ability to twirl and leap. However, as the Romantic Era unfolded, a sense of freedom, of lightness and airy elegance came into vogue - and with that came the revolution of the tutu!
Now, my darlings, letās get back to our date, 18th September 1855. Imagine a young ballerina, perhaps a mere 16 years old, practicing tirelessly in the studio. Maybe sheās learning a new dance, a beautiful piece inspired by Shakespeare, or perhaps a haunting waltz with a tragic storyline. You see, 1855 was a time when the tutu was being used not only to accentuate the grace of the dancers but also to tell stories - to evoke emotion, to take the audience on a magical journey.
The tutus at this time were quite different to what we see today, you know? They were still fairly long, and made of layers and layers of tulle, almost like a fluffy, swirling cloud! Imagine, dancing with the most beautiful and delicate of clouds, swirling about your ankles. Oh, how enchanting! These tutus were quite challenging to dance in, my darlings! The fabric wasn't very stretchy or forgiving, and it took real skill to execute all the grand jetƩs and pirouettes in those voluminous creations. Imagine, dancing in something like that all night! It takes immense stamina and dedication, which of course is what makes ballerinas such absolute stars.
I simply love exploring these historic periods in ballet history, my dears. Itās such a delight to see the origins of what we enjoy today, to appreciate how those ballerinas before us, the trailblazers who inspired it all. Just thinking about those early tutus, the graceful movement of the dancers - oh, my! It gives me such inspiration to continue my ballet journey and my travels!
