#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Year 1862 - A Fashionable Whirl! 🩰💖

Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's Emma, your #TutuTuesday history guide, coming to you live from... well, who knows where my time machine will land this week? 🕰️ This week's exciting trip brings us all the way back to 1862!

Oh, how I wish I could wear my pink tutu amongst the swirling skirts and elaborate gowns of the Victorian era. But, alas, we must be historically accurate here. And even though tutus are a sight to behold, let's be real - back in 1862, the very idea of a fluffy, airy skirt for the stage would have raised eyebrows! Scandalous! 😉

Now, don't let that stop us from enjoying the wonders of this fabulous year. After all, history is full of delightful surprises, and fashion in the 1860s was quite the spectacle! The ladies were all about showing off their curves with corsets, bustles, and voluminous skirts. The crinolines were HUGE, creating an hourglass shape that, well, let's just say I'd need a much larger pink tutu to hold that kind of volume! 💃

The Art of the Stage

Even though our tutu friends weren't strutting their stuff yet, let's not forget the grand opera houses and theatres bustling with talented dancers. You might be surprised to hear that while the Romantic era ballet was already blooming in places like Paris and Vienna, things were a bit more modest in England. The popularity of French ballets was on the rise though, and those elegant steps and breathtaking choreography were beginning to spark the interest of Londoners.

Speaking of England, 11th March 1862 happened to be the day a very important ballet was staged at the Royal Opera House! It was none other than 'The Rose, or The King and the Tinker', starring the renowned ballerina Carlotta Grisi. Can you imagine the magic of that performance? 🎻

But what's this? I smell the scent of sweet nostalgia in the air! My oh my, my time machine seems to have whisked me to… Covent Garden! The iconic opera house with its gorgeous neoclassical architecture and a stage fit for a fairytale. I can practically hear the whispers of past performers and the delicate flutter of silk and velvet as ballerinas from another era took to the stage.

Let's Talk Tutus (Even if they're not really there)

Despite our tutu absence, we can certainly draw parallels between fashion and the history of ballet. Think about those huge crinolines: A symbol of grandeur and extravagance, just like the dazzling, cascading costumes and majestic performances of ballets in the Victorian era! And don't forget, it's this same spirit of artistry that pushes fashion forward – a pursuit of beauty, grace, and elegance that resonates deeply with the essence of dance itself.

A Taste of Travel in 1862

One thing I love about time travelling is hopping on the train, just like a proper Victorian lady! It’s quite an adventure – a journey through time, across landscapes and bustling cities, each destination a new story to discover! You wouldn’t believe the elaborate gowns that ladies would wear! All so perfectly styled for travelling in elegance and sophistication. Oh, to experience a fashion show at one of the London’s famous stations!

And as I write this from my comfy seat in the carriage, I’m reminded that travelling brings a world of new perspectives and opportunities. It’s just like discovering a hidden treasure of a vintage ballet book in a quaint antique shop, each page filled with exquisite sketches of dancers in their finery, telling stories of a time gone by.
