#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1868-03-24 (Blog Post #1891)

Hello my lovely tutu-loving darlings! It’s your favourite time traveller Emma, back from a whirl through time and ready to share another slice of ballet history with you!

Today, we’re waltzing back to the 24th of March, 1868! Imagine, darling, the horse-drawn carriages, the bustle of gaslights and the elegance of a Parisian salon! Oh, how I wish I could have lived back then for just a moment – the fashions alone would be enough to send me into a tizzy!

Speaking of fashion, can you believe it's been almost three decades since the tutu graced the stage? Imagine, ladies, a world without the twirling wonder of that magical layered tulle! It's simply unimaginable, isn’t it? I truly think it’s the most gorgeous garment ever invented – not to mention the absolute epitome of graceful movement!

A Tutu Tale

To understand our beloved tutu, my dears, we must go back to its roots – a grand leap to 1839! That year, a legendary dancer named Marie Taglioni stole hearts in the iconic “La Sylphide”. In her shimmering, weightless white tutu, she pirouetted across the stage and became an icon of ballet! Her performance redefined dance forever, making the ballet tutu a timeless, eternally elegant symbol.

But let’s rewind our time machine for a moment. The evolution of the tutu didn’t happen overnight. It was a gradual process! It's true, prior to that momentous day in 1839, ballerinas were not confined by layers of fluffy tulle. Their movements were bound by the impractical layers of heavy gowns that made grace and lightness a distant dream!

Imagine being unable to spin freely, to stretch your legs into graceful arcs, to leap and pirouette with the ease of a graceful butterfly. Ghastly!

Thankfully, as the centuries moved on, ballerinas, bless their nimble souls, fought to free themselves from the heavy, constricting garments of yore! Thankfully, a more sensible and stylish dress was sought out – one that emphasized the elegance of movement rather than restricting it! And just like that, the ballet tutu became an icon!

Tutus & Fashion:

Do you know, darlings, the elegance of a tutu wasn’t just a ballet affair, not by a long shot! It filtered its way onto fashion streets – not as the voluminous skirts we see today, but in an alluring shorter, puffier style. How simply elegant! I dream of wearing those fluffy puffs of tulle every single day!

Speaking of puffy puffs of tulle, darling – you just HAVE to try it! It’s truly liberating. Go ahead, spin! Twirl! Let those layers of gossamer float like magic. Embrace the beauty of movement and the enchantment of the tutu. It's truly empowering – like wearing a touch of heaven.

Today's Happenings:

So, my darling fashionistas, what's on the agenda for the 24th of March, 1868? Well, on this date, a truly momentous occasion was unfolding in England! A royal affair – The Queen, our own magnificent Victoria, had just unveiled “The Grand National Lottery Bill”! Now that’s something to truly celebrate, isn't it?

Can you imagine being there, watching history unfold, experiencing that buzz of anticipation? How thrilling!
