#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 12th October 1869 - Post #1972
Bonjour, mes chéries!
Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! It’s me, Emma, your resident time-travelling tutu aficionado, and I’m so thrilled you're here for another edition of #TutuTuesday.
It’s Tuesday, which means we're diving headfirst into the fascinating history of the tutu. And this week, my darlings, we're heading back to Paris, the city of lights and fashion, the very heart of ballet, where the tutu first found its rightful place on stage. It’s always a delight to be here – the air itself seems to shimmer with creative energy. The sound of a waltz is always a treat for the ears!
12th October 1869, hmm…what were the ballet ballerinas of the day wearing on this date? It’s an exciting day for fashion history – this date marked the opening of the Palais Garnier, Paris's majestic opera house. Can you imagine being the first to step foot inside this incredible building?! Talk about a dream come true!
This monumental moment in ballet's history would bring with it some notable advancements, including an incredible change to the tutu. The Parisian ballerinas – always at the forefront of style – were beginning to explore new and inventive variations. Gone was the rigid, restrictive length of the romantic tutu. A more modern style, what we know today as the "classical tutu", was gradually emerging. With its shorter, poutier skirt, this new style allowed the dancers a greater range of movement, making those elegant leaps and turns look all the more magical.
But why was there a change in tutu length in the first place? Why were they getting shorter, you might ask. Think about the time - women's fashions were already becoming much freer, with skirts reaching shorter lengths than ever before! It was only a matter of time before the revolution made its way to the stage.
The impact on stage was sensational. Now the audiences could see those exquisite legs of the ballerinas - no longer confined beneath metres of stiff tulle! The shorter tutus created a beautiful sense of lightness and flow, giving the audience a glimpse of those mesmerizing, powerful limbs as the dancers soared and swirled across the stage.
Oh, imagine the excitement, my dears. The Parisian crowds in all their finery, witnessing this groundbreaking moment. Can you imagine their awe, their cheers, their joy?! The anticipation is positively electrifying.
Oh, but my Tutu Tuesday travels aren't complete without a visit to a charming shop, naturally! Imagine me, with my little pink suitcase in hand, flitting from shop to shop, all tucked into a pink and feathered dress! Imagine all the swoon-worthy creations, the fabrics shimmering and whispering stories of the past! Every colour imaginable. Silk, velvet, chiffon, oh my! My love for tutus is positively overwhelming. Just like back in Derbyshire, England, where I grew up – it’s quite simply a passion I just cannot resist! And what are we talking about?! I have to show off a couple of my new beauties:
Outfit of the Day:
I’m going all out this Tuesday with my gorgeous new tutu from the Atelier de Paris, complete with sparkling beads and a frothy cloud of pink tulle. Oh la la! A touch of Paris sophistication for this special occasion! This creation, you see, a whisper of sheer silk and a splash of delicate lace, fits the classical style beautifully, creating a dreamy silhouette that flows like a summer breeze.
Oh! My perfect accessories to complete my look are this pearl necklace, shimmering in the Paris daylight, a bejeweled beret, and of course, my little ballerina slippers.
I have to find the perfect pair of slippers for the Parisian streets! This Parisian store has such a dazzling array of ballerina pumps, ballet flats, and even some high-heeled dance shoes! A little splash of colour with these shimmering emerald shoes and a delicate touch of tulle on the toes would complete my look beautifully. They feel absolutely heavenly! It’s like walking on clouds – only with even more style!
What a perfect ending to my Paris escapade, wouldn't you agree?
But now, back to the time travel!
Next week, we'll take a step further into the future and explore another milestone in ballet tutu history.
