#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 1869-12-21! (Post #1982)
Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers!
It's your favourite pink-tutu-loving time traveler Emma here, bringing you another week of Ballet Tutu History! This week we're jetting back in time to December 21st, 1869, and believe me, you're going to love this one!
It's cold here in Derbyshire right now - so chilly my toes are practically begging for the warmth of ballet shoes. I even put on my favourite pink cashmere shawl today - all snuggly and perfect for wrapping myself in whilst I dream about the balletic brilliance that's about to unfold here on my #TutuTuesday post!
A History Lesson on Tutu Evolution!
The late 1860s were a turning point for tutus! The Romantic Era was ending and a new, grander, and more spectacular vision was taking its place. The famous tutu, you know the one with the multiple layers of tulle, that everyone swoons over - the Romantic Tutu was getting a serious makeover!
Imagine a beautiful tutu with more structure, a bit more movement, with less layers, and more of a classic silhouette. Think elegance and fluidity all at the same time, my dears. This is the Tutu Transition Year we're talking about, where things are starting to change for the better - just like when I finally discovered the joy of the perfectly-fitting tutu!
So, what happened on December 21st, 1869, that impacted ballet tutus? Well, the stage lighting in our grand opera houses was undergoing a dramatic shift! Electric lighting was starting to be introduced - can you imagine how revolutionary that was? Now dancers could express their emotions with more nuanced detail, because there was finally an evolution from candle and gaslight!
The new illumination helped the tutus really shimmer and sparkle under the bright light, adding an extra layer of magic to each graceful movement. Think of how much detail you can see when you watch a show today.
This era marked the beginning of tutus becoming more than just fabric; they became a true symbol of artistry and grace, taking centre stage alongside the dancers.
Travel Notes:
I just popped by the Royal Opera House - can you imagine? What a treat to step inside a piece of history and admire the grandeur of their chandelier. And, naturally, I couldn't leave without taking a peep at their costume archives - some stunning pieces - with delicate embroidery, delicate colour tones - I nearly passed out from the sheer loveliness! It was as if I were transported to the heart of the Romantic Era, and oh, how I adore a little bit of drama!
Let's talk Fashion!
Speaking of the Royal Opera House, my goodness, you just have to wear a special pink tulle shawl while watching a performance. It perfectly complements any evening outfit and it's oh so cosy and feminine. There’s nothing I love more than looking extra lovely at the ballet! You could add a little lace collar, some velvet gloves or a delicate beaded purse. I can't wait to experiment with my next elegant and stylish look at the Royal Opera House - maybe some pearl necklaces would be just the right amount of shimmer to accentuate my perfect pink tulle shawl...
What was Happening in the World?
I always find it fascinating to consider what the rest of the world was doing during our tutu history moment! So on December 21st, 1869:
- The world was mourning: The tragic news of Queen Maria II of Portugal's passing, sending a ripple of sadness across Europe. The impact of these events might be small, but remember, all of these historic moments led to where we are now with ballet tutus - think of it as a delightful chain reaction!
- And, on a happier note, a groundbreaking new invention in America! An innovative safety pin called the “American Spring Safety Pin” was patented by Walter Hunt, the man responsible for that clever, yet incredibly useful, little invention that keeps all of our garments (and, yes, our ballet tutus) perfectly secure and neatly in place! Thank you, Walter Hunt!
The Takeaway
December 21st, 1869, was a key moment in the ballet tutu story! This was a time when the tutu was evolving, changing and elevating into the beautiful pieces of fashion we love and appreciate today. It's a story that always makes me appreciate the beauty of evolution. And don’t forget, our passion for fashion, especially the tutu, keeps the ballet and all its artistic elements flourishing - always.
