#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through the 19th Century with Emma! 🩰
Hello my dearest Tutu Twirlers!
Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things tutu, where the only thing we love more than a good twirl is a good old fashioned history lesson! Today marks post number 2143 of my ever-growing collection of #TutuTuesday posts, and as you all know, Tuesday is for twirling! I hope your week is off to a smashing start.
Today, my pink tutu and I have hopped on the express train to 1873, a time of corsets, crinoline, and an age of change for the ballet world! Let's face it, ladies, even though my tutu is oh-so-lovely and undeniably fabulous, my fashion sense is practically a crime in the world of the Victorian Era! Those big, heavy dresses with all the frills? Just imagine trying to prance around on stage with a heavy costume like that! Honestly, it would probably require an Olympic athlete just to manage a simple relevé!
Speaking of the ballet stage, this is a time of massive change in the world of ballet. We're in the midst of the Romantic Era, a period in which dancers and audiences alike embraced all things dreamy, graceful, and absolutely exquisite! Gone are the heavy, rigid costumes that restricted movement, and instead, dancers began to showcase more of their natural beauty and elegance!
Imagine a time where ballerinas started sporting more streamlined costumes that revealed the natural form, allowing dancers to truly take flight with graceful leaps and delicate moves! Imagine the sheer delight of seeing that graceful line, those flowing tutus!
You bet your top hat that the 1870s ushered in a wave of groundbreaking performances! Think ballerinas like Marie Taglioni, considered a queen of the Romantic Era, whose grace and ethereal moves became legendary. I'd love to pop over to Paris, take a peak at a performance, and grab a delicious Parisian patisserie or two, of course.
But the story doesn’t stop there, darling! As always, there's more to discover, and what's today’s date you might ask? Well it’s 21 January 1873, a date filled with history and an array of remarkable events. While history books might mention mundane happenings, it was also a day when fashion was evolving. The first sewing machines started popping up, revolutionising fashion and helping us make the fabulous, flowy creations I know you all adore!
Fun fact!
I love the beauty and intricate designs of costumes from this time period. They really do showcase the feminine and romantic era with such elegance! The use of fabrics, particularly delicate tulle, gave rise to more feminine, less restrictive and oh-so-fashionable designs! Who would have thought that ballet, fashion, and invention could intertwine so beautifully? I mean, who wouldn't want to get all dolled up in a lavish dress, strut their stuff with their fellow ballerinas, and twirl to the heart's content? It’s enough to make this Tutu Twirling Time Traveler want to dance, I tell ya!
But let's not get too carried away! Remember that pink tutu of mine? I’ll leave you all with this little gem of a fact: The popularity of tutus began to skyrocket during this time, and believe me, the more popular they became, the more delighted I was, you can trust me on that! We are so lucky to be living in an era where tutus are not just on the ballet stage, but in our streets, at our fashion shows, and yes, even at our picnics, darling! Isn't it marvellous how fashion can weave through the years, influencing even us Tutu Twirlers!
I’ll catch you all next week when I hop aboard the Time Train to another remarkable era! Don't forget to share your #TutuTuesday moments with me! Until next week, keep on twirling!
All the love and tulle, Emma 💖
