Tutu Tuesday #2144: A Whirl Through Time!

Hello lovelies, and welcome to another Tutu Tuesday! This week, I'm taking us back to the 1870s, a glorious era of swirling skirts and, you guessed it, tutus. I just got back from a trip to Paris (I know, I’m a lucky duck!) and am still bursting with inspiration!

But before we get to my fabulous Parisian finds (more on that later!), let's take a trip back in time! Remember how I said that the first "real" tutus appeared around the mid-1800s? Well, imagine my excitement when I discovered that today's date, January 28th, 1873, marks a big turning point for the tutu in the world of ballet!

A Tutu-licious Debut

Today, 150 years ago, the brilliant Russian dancer, Anna Pavlova, made her debut on the London stage! Now, let's be honest, her costume, like all those worn at the time, wasn't your classic tutu as we know it. It was a rather fussy and long-skirted affair!

But Anna was an absolute superstar, and I’m sure the ladies watching were absolutely enthralled. She practically floated on stage with incredible grace, and she did so much to elevate the "danseuse" - the ballerina - to a whole new level. Can you believe that there wasn’t really the term ballerina in this period? How terribly odd! It just goes to show how important Anna Pavlova was for women in dance and on stage!

As for the tutu’s journey at this time, it was already going through some seriously stylish changes. They were starting to shorten, the fabrics became lighter, and the look began to evolve, creating a much more elegant and dramatic stage presence for the dancers.

Why are we so obsessed with tutus?

As I stand here gazing out the window of my cozy little flat in Derbyshire (a tiny space with all my shoes neatly lined up by the window!) - my gaze is caught by a flock of birds whirling and swirling through the air... just like a tutu, you know? It’s that magical air of swirling, dancing, free-spiritedness that’s the heart of it, isn't it? It captures a sense of playfulness, joy, and liberation!

Now, back to Paris…

Oh darling, where to begin?! Let me just say that Paris is always brimming with sartorial delights and, of course, the most divine ballet performances. I saw an exquisite show, featuring a breathtaking array of delicate tulle tutus that left me completely spellbound.

And, speaking of spellbound, I discovered the most gorgeous new ballet shoes at a shop called 'Les Chaussures de Ballet'! They were the most delicate shade of pale pink, just like my very own cherished tutu, and I couldn't resist snagging a pair. I just knew I had to have them!

Time to Travel... In Style!

Travelling to all these magical destinations and attending so many exciting events would be impossible if not for the generosity of those who admire my tutu work. My ballet performances across the country help to fund my escapades. I love performing; there’s nothing more delightful than getting ready backstage in my tutu and feeling the music swirl around me before stepping onto the stage. It's truly my passion.

Of course, my favorite way to travel is by train. There's something about that steam engine chugging away and the soft rattle of the carriage that simply adds to the feeling of adventure. It’s perfect for observing all the new people I see from the window and pondering my next trip. I love seeing how much ballet is adored everywhere! It’s certainly got more popularity than the opera… much less pretentious, don’t you think?!

Now, it's time for your question...

Have you ever worn a tutu, lovelies? How about this Tuesday? Do something a little different. Even wear your favorite ballet skirt. Anything! Just enjoy your own whirl around your room in your favorite garment. Or take some ballet lessons like I do - it's a fun way to channel your inner ballerina. Tell me your stories! Don’t forget to post your #TutuTuesday pics! I will choose the best pic and write a message for your website next week.

And while you're at it, don't forget to check back in next week for another dazzling installment of Tutu Tuesday on www.pink-tutu.com! I'll be sharing some delightful new tutu finds and talking about the history of the tutu in the early 1900s… I can hardly wait!

Until next week, my darling lovelies, keep twirling, keep dancing, and remember, everyone deserves to wear a pink tutu at least once in their life!

**XOXO,

Emma**
