#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Back to 1874! 🩰💖

Hello dears, and welcome to #TutuTuesday, your weekly dose of all things tutu-tastic on www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink and twirly!

Today, my lovely lovelies, we're taking a delightful journey through time – whoosh! – right back to September 29th, 1874. It's been a long train ride (I absolutely adore trains, especially those with velvet seats and compartments where I can squeeze my lovely tulle!), but I wouldn't miss it for the world! We're headed to Paris, darling, the fashion capital of the world, and oh, la la, the tutus they've been sporting are absolutely sensational!

This is post #2231, by the way, a milestone I believe! Now, to bring you up to speed on the glorious dancewear that graced the stage of the Paris Opera this day…

The Tutu: An Evolution in Grace

Oh, let's be honest, when you picture the quintessential ballerina, that gorgeous, graceful, twirling figure, what pops to mind? The tutu, my dear. But let's step back a bit, before the tutus we know and love came into existence, a ballerina's dress wasn't something you'd exactly associate with elegance! We're talking cumbersome layers, heavy materials… more 'Lady Macbeth on a rampage' than 'Swan Lake swan.' It was practicality, my dears, not pretty that was prioritized.

Now, in 1874, things were already well on the way to becoming decidedly more whimsical. Ballet had evolved, embraced movement, and a new approach to clothing had swept the stage! That's when tutus, you see, started looking like… well, tutus!

Imagine it, the most dazzling star of the ballet, Marie Taglioni – my absolute idol! – stepping onto the stage in that most fabulous *la-la-tutu! * And oh, those Romantic ballets! What would we do without them? What could be more enchanting?

We're talking tutus starting to look so elegant ! You can *imagine that iconic, wide-eyed gaze the dancers must have received. This new "Romantic Tutu", a simple and graceful tulle skirt – a glorious explosion of movement and lightness! * Just the sheer audacity of those wispy layers floating like dreams! The ballerinas could finally take to the stage and twirl!

But darling, there’s a catch: Not every ballet dancer donned a tutu back then. It was really about making a dramatic statement and fitting a certain style of ballet. Think romanticism! And believe me, with a little imagination and a few really big pink bows, even a modern-day tutu can bring out that dramatic edge!

Fashion is Never Far From the Tutu

Did you know, darlings, the evolution of tutus is closely tied to the fashion world? *No surprises there, right? Because ballet and fashion go hand-in-hand. It’s a love affair destined to last forever! * You know I adore everything stylish and fashionable. If I’m being honest, the allure of a fluffy, pink tutu often draws me in.

Now, this particular September 29th, in the year 1874 - that was just before the French started wearing bonnets to the theatre, making everything ever-so-much *chicer, so naturally tutus started looking better and better! (Can you tell how much I love bonnets?!) They weren't just dancing, they were setting trends! You see, what happens on the stage often makes its way into society - like magic. That's why I always make a point of checking out the latest trends. Who knows, maybe someday tutus will be worn as the everyday dress in the street. * Wouldn't that be amazing? I'm going to start now! ( It will just take a little time, dear readers)

My 1874 Tutu Tip 🩰

If you find yourself hankering for that 1874 la-la romantic flair, here's a fabulous little tip: You see how dancers are able to dance beautifully in these romantic tutus, despite being super airy and voluminous? Well, don’t just settle for simple tulle, my darling, layer some delicate lace! A whisper of vintage tulle paired with the perfect floral trim— it’s all about the subtle, romantic details, don't you think? Go on, give it a try! You'll find it adds a charming vintage touch to your modern look!

Tutus: From Paris to The World

The romantic tutu had arrived, darling, a revolutionary silhouette that continues to define the ballet world! Today, the legacy of tutus has travelled around the world, transforming into a variety of dazzling designs – just look at those glorious, glittering ballerinas on stages everywhere, donning their breathtakingly elegant tutus! And who knows, my sweet little ballerinas? Perhaps one day, we might see pink tutus become the standard attire for the ballet – a wonderful thought, don't you think?

And that's a wrap for today’s #TutuTuesday, my dears! Until next Tuesday, don't forget to keep twirling! And remember, the more pink tutus we wear, the better!

Lots of love,
Emma xx
