#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time – Ballet Tutu History: 1874-10-06! (Blog Post #2232)

Bonjour, my darling tutu-lovers! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com – your one-stop shop for all things tutu and all things fabulous! This week on #TutuTuesday, we’re taking a little trip through time. Pack your pink tulle bags, grab your favourite tiaras, and hop aboard the time-travelling tutu express. Today, we're journeying back to the 6th of October, 1874!

Now, I'm sure you all know that I simply adore tutus, but I also have a sneaking fondness for a bit of history! (After all, my love of tutus knows no bounds in time, remember?)

Imagine yourself, darlings, back in 1874. The year of the first successful telephone! You might have seen the very first issue of The Graphic on the streets. Did you catch the latest performance by The Great Sarah Bernhardt at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt? This is a magical time, darlings, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Of course, there's one place we always go for an incredible show: The Paris Opera! Oh, it’s a dazzling wonderland of movement, music, and... wait for it... tutuleciousness! In 1874, they're still absolutely enamoured with the romanticism of the period, the ballet is breathtaking. Imagine La Sylphide, Giselle, or the captivating beauty of Coppélia, all graced by those exquisite tutus! Just picture a ballerina gliding through the stage in a gloriously billowing tutu, its pink tulle cascading like a soft, graceful cloud. That, my lovelies, is true ballet magic!

Of course, we mustn't forget the importance of the pointe shoe! (As if!) Those exquisite pointed shoes would have graced the toes of every graceful ballerina – allowing them to create those mesmerising, impossibly beautiful movements! They weren't quite as fancy as what we have today (Oh, my darling, the way my feet thank me every day for these soft, supportive shoes!). But, back in 1874, those little pointe shoes gave the ballerina a remarkable grace and artistry!

Let's face it, it wasn't all pink fluff in 1874. While the tutus were getting prettier and fluffier, a whole debate was going on in the ballet world – the eternal question, if you will: should ballet be classical and formal, or dramatic and theatrical?

Oh, my darlings! We're at the start of a wonderful change in ballet history! Let's have a cuppa, and a little slice of cake (we have the finest pink sugar in all of London!), and imagine a ballet dancer taking the stage with a flowing pink tutu, showing the world just how breathtaking ballet could be! It's a thrilling time for all us tutu-lovers!

While we're reminiscing, don't forget! You can always take a little inspiration from 1874! A little lace trim on a pink tutu... or perhaps a sash in the most delicate shade of lavender.

Of course, you can get your own amazing pink tulle just by visiting the fabulous Liberty's department store here in London – and there’s not a shop anywhere in the world that can beat it! The fabrics and fashions they stock here will leave you positively dizzy! I always make sure I have at least two trips per month to keep my stock of ribbons, trims and oh-so-pink delights stocked up to the brim! And with all the fabrics at my fingertips, a bit of ingenuity, and a needle and thread, I always make a habit of transforming a humble, boring old tutu into a fabulous spectacle of pure, feminine perfection!

For example, just last month, I had the grand idea of giving my tutus a little Parisian flair by adding a touch of embroidery, or even hand-painted details on the skirt. I swear, those delicate flowers just made the tutu sing with a charming air of romance and artistry. Of course, it involved sitting for hours with a cup of Earl Grey in hand and my needle going tap tap tap through beautiful silk fabric! But for that delicate loveliness... a good cuppa is always a good reward!

Until next time, darlings! Don't forget, the only time to stop wearing your pink tutus is when your dreams begin!

Yours always,
Emma
