#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - Post 2768 - 13th January 1885

Bonjour, darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu clad time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back for another installment of #TutuTuesday! Today we're whisking ourselves back to Paris in the elegant year of 1885, and oh my, the fashion! We’re talking swirling silks, exquisite lace and of course, the undeniable allure of the ballet tutu!

Stepping Back in Time

Today, I’m stepping off the Orient Express - imagine, all that opulence and elegance whizzing through the countryside! And my first stop? A charming Parisian boutique. Oh, the bonnets, the silk gowns, the frothy parasols! But it’s the whispers of the tutu that truly get my heart aflutter. Back in 1885, it wasn’t just about fluttering skirts, it was about elegance and artistry, and nothing says that quite like the graceful sweep of a tutu.

From The Stage To The Streets

You might be thinking, "Emma, tutus belong on the stage!" Well, you'd be absolutely right! And guess what? Back in the late 1800s, they did! These delicate creations were worn by the world's most captivating ballerinas, the stars of the Grand Opera! Their delicate designs, the wisps of tulle swirling in a glorious flurry as they leaped, turned and danced with unmatched grace - it was simply magical!

The Rise Of The Romantic Tutu

While the tutus of the day might have been more like long, billowing skirts – think of a Victorian princess about to step out of a fairytale – their popularity began to grow and by the late 1800s, the shape we recognise today was starting to emerge. Shorter, lighter and undeniably captivating, the romantic tutu was truly starting to make a splash!

Tutus In Paris? Mais Oui!

Oh, darling, what's a Parisian fashion week without the magic of the tutu! But back in 1885, it's not about catwalk shows - it’s about whispered gossip, whispered in luxurious salons filled with exquisite bonnets, beautiful frocks and yes, of course, a few hints of tutu inspiration. And what better way to get that theatrical air into your attire than a touch of tutu influence! Think about a subtle ruffle or a wisp of lace at the hem, or a flowing skirt – these subtle nods to the ballet's graceful elegance add that special je ne sais quoi.

A Little Parisian Inspiration

Paris was the heart of it all – it was the hub of everything fashion and culture, and darling, did the ladies ever dress to impress! We’re talking lace and satin, delicate embroidery, exquisite fabrics and the ultimate must-have accessory? A beautifully designed bonbonnière - an elegant container for your bonbons, which added a playful touch of the ballet's airy femininity. Oh, I'm simply captivated by this era.

Time To Embrace The Tutu

So darling, let's embrace that 1885 spirit! Today's #TutuTuesday calls for embracing all things charming and delightful. It's about finding the sparkle in every day, channeling the Parisian spirit of romance and beauty, and maybe even letting a whisper of tutu grace slip into our own style.

Emma's Fashion Challenge

Because even though the tutus of today are the graceful silhouettes we adore – they're more for the stage than the street (even for yours truly!), we can still inject a touch of ballet charm into our outfits. So, for this week's challenge, why not try a playful, whimsical detail, like a tulle scarf, a delicate lace trim or perhaps even a cute, ruffled skirt for a taste of the magic!
