#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - November 9th, 1886 - Post #2863! 🩰💖
Hello my darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things pink and twirly. Today we’re taking a trip back in time for another edition of #TutuTuesday!
Today we’re landing on November 9th, 1886, a date not known for groundbreaking events in ballet tutu history, but definitely worth exploring for the atmosphere! This date falls smack-bang in the heart of the Victorian Era. It’s the golden age of elegant, elaborate dance, but just imagine those beautiful skirts - big, voluminous, flowing - all constructed without the modern magic of synthetic fabrics!
The ballet scene of 1886 would have been a whirlwind of romance and spectacle. Ballet performances weren’t confined to one dedicated stage like they are today. Performances would have happened at operas, theatres and even at grand private events for the elite! I can just picture it: ladies swishing in silks and satins, men with impressive moustaches, a touch of the romantic in the air, and that oh-so-spectacular show of dance!
My travels recently brought me to St. Petersburg, Russia, which just so happens to be one of the capitals of ballet at the time. They have the famed Mariinsky Theatre there, still one of the world's leading dance companies! Imagine being in that theatre, all the rustling of gowns, the expectant silence, the music... Just incredible!
And then of course, you've got the famous tutu!
Now, 1886 is a little bit too early to get a classic ‘whirl’ skirt with all its pouffy beauty (the evolution of that design wasn't until later), but a tutu would certainly have been present! This is the age of the romantic, of floating fabric and ethereal elegance! Imagine graceful flowing tulle layers and an emphasis on the soft and feminine, the airy and enchanting!
If I could slip back in time today, my pink tutu (definitely a more flamboyant, Victorian era pink! Not a sickly pink like today!) would definitely be in the ballet spotlight. Maybe I could find some fabulous new designs!
Back to today's world
Of course, no #TutuTuesday is complete without my little bit of fashion advice! Here are my favourite pink tutu outfit ideas for November! Think Parisian-chic meets ballet dream!
The Pink Tutu Blouse: Try pairing your favourite blush or peach blouse with some sleek tailored trousers - black, navy, cream, anything to create that stunning contrast. Add a delicate, delicate gold necklace or statement earrings and a simple clutch bag for a Parisian edge. You can wear your shoes to match your trousers, ballet flats, heels, anything!
The Tutu Dress: It's the classic ballerina look, it just works! A light-as-air pink tulle skirt or dress with a simple bodice for a timeless elegant look! I suggest layering a cream turtleneck for extra warmth and fashion appeal, a delicate floral scarf for that touch of colour and charm and of course, complete the look with a perfect ballerina bun.
Remember my darlings, this is your chance to bring a little magic into your own world. What better way to add some sparkle to your day than with a touch of pink? And with November getting colder, we might as well add some vibrant, light and cheerful hues to our everyday style!
Let me know your favourite pink tutu style! I’d love to hear your thoughts and tips on pink fashion!
Remember to check back in next Tuesday for another #TutuTuesday and for a more specific historical piece, perhaps I’ll share some historical fashion pictures and interesting anecdotes from my journeys!
Love,
