Tutu Tuesday #3022: A Glimpse into Ballet History, 1889!

Hello my darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-traveler Emma here, back for another delightful dive into the history of our beloved tutu! This week, we're taking a little trip back in time, all the way to November 26th, 1889.

I can practically smell the gaslight streetlamps and hear the bustle of a London afternoon! Oh, the excitement of the Victorian era, where our tutus truly started to blossom! Can you believe, my darlings, that it's just over a hundred years ago since our beloved tutus took the shape they hold today?

I found the most darling train ride, a luxurious First Class compartment, straight to the Royal Opera House! As the carriage rattled over the tracks, I could practically picture the ballerinas flitting across the stage in their gloriously extravagant tutus. Just imagining the delicate silk ruffles and the intricate beadwork sends shivers down my spine!

Now, you all know how much I adore shopping! Back in 1889, it was a must-do to visit the dressmakers. They were churning out incredible designs for the ballerinas, each one more dazzling than the last! Imagine: tutus with swirling silk, glittering with sequins and topped with plumes of feathers โ€“ a dream!

But it wasn't all glamour and extravagance, you know. This very day, November 26th, 1889, the esteemed ballet dancer* Enrico Cecchetti performed with the Italian Ballet in *St. Petersburg, Russia! Oh, wouldn't it have been wonderful to witness Cecchetti, known for his technical brilliance and his breathtaking artistry in one of those perfectly formed tutus?

A Brief History of the Tutu: From The Stage To The Street

The tutu has come a long way, darlings. It began as a practical garment, concealing the voluminous skirts of earlier ballerinas and allowing them freedom of movement.

I particularly adore the romantic tutu, a creation of the early 1800s! Made from delicate tulle, it swirled around the ballerinas with effortless grace. Then, of course, we have the classical tutu, which was designed in the 1840s for the ballerinas to elevate their leaps, literally!

Oh, and don't even get me started on the beautiful Russian tutus - designed by those master artisans, they are just the epitome of elegance, refinement, and sheer artistry!

Itโ€™s Not Just About the Dance, Darling!

But I firmly believe, my darlings, that tutus are so much more than just ballet costumes. We can all embrace the grace and whimsy of the tutu! Don't you agree? Think about it - the joy of swirling a tulle skirt as you walk down the street, a little touch of magic in everyday life!

Tutus can inspire us, elevate our spirits and bring out our inner ballerina! And isn't that something we should all strive for?

*Hereโ€™s my suggestion: * why not grab your favorite tutu, put on your brightest smile, and twirl like there's no tomorrow? It's the best way to inject a dose of sunshine and sparkle into the world!

Until next week, my lovely friends, keep twirling! And remember: if you're ever feeling down, just slip on your tutu, twirl your heart out, and let your worries melt away!

Emma xoxo
