#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through History - June 10th, 1890

Greetings, dearest tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood time-travelling ballerina, back with another #TutuTuesday blast from the past! It’s post number 3050 for my Ballet Tutu History blog and, as always, I'm bringing you a pink-tastic journey through the fascinating evolution of this most iconic of dance garments!

Fasten your seatbelts, darlings, because today we're stepping back in time to the glittering world of 1890, to the heart of ballet itself, Paris. Can you imagine, my dears, being swept up in the elegance of a Parisian theatre on this very day?

It’s June the 10th, 1890, a balmy summer evening – the air thick with the scent of honeysuckle and the anticipation of a magnificent show. Tonight, the ballet world is abuzz with the excitement of La Bayadère, the legendary masterpiece by Marius Petipa and Ludwig Minkus, set to be performed by the renowned Ballets Russes, a company that would come to revolutionize the world of ballet.

Now, I’m not one to spill all the tea (though a spot of afternoon tea would be divine!), but let me tell you about those tutus.

Imagine a graceful ballerina with billowing skirts of white, the epitome of classic ballet, swirling with an ethereal beauty. Think light, airy, and voluminous, made from layers of tulle that whispered and twirled with every delicate movement. It was the epitome of romanticism, a perfect harmony between tradition and artistic expression, don’t you think?

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the jewels, my darlings! Pearls, diamonds, sapphires... all adorning the dancers in breathtaking abundance, adding sparkle to every step, a truly opulent and dazzling spectacle!

Just like we see in ballet performances today, the focus was on the ballerina’s gracefulness and artistry. Every step was choreographed to emphasize the beauty of their movements and their form within the voluminous tulle. These tutus weren't just about decoration; they were integral to the expression of the dance, telling a story, capturing emotions, and painting a beautiful picture with their swirling fabric.

And speaking of painting a picture… Did you know that ballet has always been closely linked to fashion? We have to thank the influential designers of the era, like Charles Frederick Worth, whose creations directly influenced the style of ballerinas, adding elements of luxury and refinement to the world of ballet. It was a perfect marriage, my dears – a celebration of beauty in motion, on and off the stage. Just like today, these beautiful garments inspired and captivated fashion enthusiasts and even those beyond the world of ballet.

Oh, and let’s not forget the exquisite accessories! A diadem upon her brow, glittering with jewels; elegant earrings that shimmered with each turn; a necklace to adorn the slender neck... Oh, it's enough to make any fashion-loving soul swoon, wouldn’t you agree?

Now, a little about how I, Emma, landed in this glamorous time (and trust me, you won’t be disappointed with my travels in the future!). I, a simple ballet enthusiast, a lover of all things tutu-licious and pink, stumbled upon a magical opportunity to visit different times, witness the ballet’s evolution and, most importantly, indulge in all the wonder this fabulous fashion world offers!

It all started with an antique music box – my beloved grandmother’s cherished heirloom, a tiny pink one. But this little treasure held an extraordinary secret – a portal, if you will. Every time I wind its delicate key, I’m transported through time, arriving right in the midst of a grand spectacle of ballets!

And how do I fund this grand adventure? My darlings, a good old-fashioned love for my passion! I put my skills to good use, dancing on the grand stages of every time period I visit. I give dazzling performances (no need for tutus here, for it would just give the show away!), delighting the audiences of those times, gathering enough to afford my next time travel adventure, and returning to you, sharing the tales of a fascinating and wondrous world!

This journey, my loves, has led me to understand that tutus are more than just beautiful costumes; they are emblems of art, expression, and passion. They’re the whispers of the stage, carrying the stories of countless ballerinas, telling of grace and strength, of dedication and the joy of dance.

And what would these journeys be without the vibrant hues? Now, as you all know, pink is my passion! A symphony of sweetness, a whisper of innocence, the quintessential colour for tutus! Think ballet and think pink! I even encourage you to take to the streets and, if you dare, sport your own personal tutu; it's the perfect way to embrace this beautiful art form in its most whimsical form.

And for my fellow time travelers and ballet devotees – how about you? Share your stories, your insights! What tutus have you fallen in love with? Which eras have mesmerized you the most? Tell me about your tutu tales – the bigger and bolder, the better, darlings!

Till next Tuesday, my dears, may your tutus be voluminous, your journeys filled with pink-tastic joy, and your ballet steps be as graceful as those of a beautiful, swan!

Until next time,

Your darling ballerina blogger,

Emma
