#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: A Journey Through Time - 1891!

Post 3104

Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com! It’s a gloriously sunny Tuesday, perfect for a twirl in a tulle dream! As you all know, I'm your very own time-travelling tutu ambassador, Emma, on a mission to make the world a more pink-and-tulle-filled place.

Today's #TutuTuesday takes us right back to 1891 – just imagine! A time of elegant horse-drawn carriages, grand Victorian balls, and the birth of some seriously stylish dance trends. Let’s step aboard the time machine and set the dial for…well, Paris, of course!

As I step onto the bustling streets of Paris, I feel a distinct whiff of revolution brewing – but this is a revolution in fashion, not politics. It's a new age of chic, and at the centre of it all is ballet, and let me tell you, darling, ballet is having a moment.

Just this past week, I had the absolute pleasure of catching a performance of La Bayadère, and oh, what a spectacle! The sheer volume of tulle, sparkle, and flourishes… it’s enough to give a ballerina heart palpitations!

But let's back up for a moment and get our tutu facts straight: did you know that 1891 was a momentous year for The Great White Way? The Metropolitan Opera House, a jewel box of glitz and glamour, opened its doors on Broadway in New York. And guess what was a highlight of the grand opening? You guessed it: a dazzling ballet performance, complete with, you guessed it… gorgeous, flowy tutus!

Oh, wouldn’t it have been just divine to be present at such a grand event? Just imagine, watching those incredible ballerinas spin and leap, a whirl of silken tulle around them!

But our historical journey isn't confined to just one date, oh no. In 1891, we are witnessing the birth of ballet as a truly international phenomenon. And with every grand performance, every grand prima ballerina… well, let's just say, the tutu is on the rise, and taking over the stage, and soon the whole world.

Let’s jump right in: what was the style of tutus in this oh-so-enchanting era? I am, of course, all about the romantic tutus. You know, the soft, floating layers of tulle, almost like fluffy pink clouds. They're all about elegance and femininity – precisely my style, you see. And those colours, oh dear me! Pastels were the stars of the show – the softest pinks, pale blues, and delicate creams. And every tutu was hand-stitched, a beautiful symphony of tiny stitches and delicate details. Pure luxury, I tell you.

Don't let these visions of romantic tulle cloud your judgment, however. The Imperial Russian Ballet, known for its incredible athleticism and intricate choreography, was also having a bit of a tutu revolution of their own. Now, they might not be embracing my pale pink pastels quite so eagerly, but I can tell you this: the tutus were getting shorter, even much shorter! It's a fascinating evolution of the tutu, showcasing not just the art of dancing but also the evolution of female form as the centrepiece of ballet. We might not all be comfortable with the shortness just yet, but we’re in the early stages of seeing this kind of daring change become the norm. And what do I say to that? More power to those fearless prima ballerinas, I say!

One of my most favourite memories, you see, involves a little trip back to 1893 (a t e n d e r, I know, but it's only a quick hop!), where I had the privilege of attending a ballet at the Met! This incredible stage had, I’m sure you’ll agree, every ballet buff swooning, twirling, and gushing over all things tutu. At that performance, there was a divine ballerina named Anna Pavlova who absolutely stole the show in a gloriously frilled tutu the colour of the sunset. Talk about a sensation, she was utterly divine, truly a testament to the power of the ballet tutu.

Oh, my dears! But the history of tutus is an endless whirling wonderland. It's a magical tale of beauty and passion woven through centuries and continents, and it wouldn't be the same without the sparkling brilliance of these beautiful creations!

Oh, my dears, speaking of creations, I must confess, I've been indulging in my own little design adventures of late. Just yesterday, I created the most enchanting tutu with delicate layers of pale pink tulle, just dreaming of twirling across the stage in it. I'll just have to hold that vision for a future date.

Speaking of visions and future dates, how about you make your very own ballet date night? Grab your very own tutu (you do have a tutu, don't you? ), invite your favourite person, or yourself if you're a single ballerina, grab some pink champagne, and let the magical journey begin.

Don't forget to snap some pictures and share your adventures with me on social media using #PinkTutu. And please do join me next week as we take a whirl through the fascinating history of ballet!

Until then, twirl on, darlings!
