#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Time!
Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It’s Emma here, back again for another #TutuTuesday with another dip into the wonderful, sparkly, whirling world of ballet tutu history. Today's date, 7th July 1891, marks a truly delightful step forward in our favourite style of dance, but before I tell you all about it, grab your tea and a biscuit, settle into your comfiest chair and let me catch you up on my latest adventures.
Firstly, did you know that I spent the last few weeks touring all around Paris? Can you imagine! Paris is such a vibrant city - there's such a beautiful energy about the place. You can literally feel the history of ballet coursing through its streets. It's a city that wears fashion like a second skin. I managed to catch several wonderful performances, and let me tell you, they were simply spectacular! I must have visited a dozen ateliers filled with gorgeous gowns and exquisite handmade tutus – I nearly fainted with excitement!
Anyway, I do love to talk, but I don't want to keep you in suspense. Let’s journey back to 7th July 1891, to a most splendid event, right here in the very heart of Paris, at the hallowed halls of the Palais Garnier, that glorious jewel of architecture where all the very best in dance are showcased.
And who was performing, you might ask? None other than the inimitable, the delightful, the very famous – Anna Pavlova. Oh my, to have witnessed her on that stage, the very essence of grace, such breathtaking elegance, so very inspiring!
But, you ask, why was this day so important for tutus? Well, darling, you see, this very night Anna Pavlova unveiled a new design - an ingenious and simply magnificent creation! It's quite shocking how groundbreaking it was! This new style of tutu had no weight at all. Think of it, like a cloud! Gone were the stiff layers of tulle, the bulky petticoats that limited movement, replaced with just three tiers of soft, floaty, whispery tulle. A symphony of graceful folds and twirls! The very essence of ethereal beauty! The effect, absolutely divine, and utterly iconic! I could almost hear a collective gasp from the audience as Pavlova began to move across the stage, a dream in pink tulle!
Imagine how exhilarating this new design must have been for the dancers. With the restrictions of the old style lifted, the ballerinas could now express themselves fully! Such artistry, such freedom, it made the whole thing even more exhilarating, didn't it? No longer a mere support for the dance, the tutu became a language of its own - whispering tales of flight, grace, and exquisite expression. It truly was a turning point!
I just love how tutus have evolved throughout the ages. Don't you? Just look at them: the stiff romantic tutu, with all its beautiful frills, the flamboyant demi-tutu of the mid 1800s, the simple graceful classical tutu, then the glorious modern interpretations that make me just want to dance right here, right now! It's an evolution so lovely and creative - like fashion itself! It truly makes the story of ballet tutus the most captivating tale!
I confess, I even had to stop for a little shopping spree at the grand Palais Royale - one simply cannot resist the beauty of Parisian fabrics! But my dear, can we just agree that a perfectly tailored tutu is not a fashion item, it's a statement of grace and elegance! You just have to see it.
Talking of Parisian grace, there are many other remarkable stories that surround the ballerina’s tutus, their fascinating history and the captivating styles. Did you know that, for a time, even pink became the standard for the dancer’s tutus? This beautiful colour represents delicate beauty and femininity and reminds us how deeply intertwined the worlds of dance and fashion truly are. I can tell you, a little trip to the famous Rue de la Paix will show you that pink remains one of the hottest colours on the scene! Just try resisting a new, stylish, tulle skirt in the most exquisite shade of pink. Go on, indulge!
And for all you dear friends who wish to step into this incredible world of dance and tutus, you simply must follow in Anna Pavlova’s elegant footsteps and see her story in motion at the Palais Garnier. This, after all, is the essence of dance. A captivating symphony of tutus, steps, emotions, and beautiful stories. The very essence of the story of ballet - which will inspire you forevermore.
That said, my lovely, tutus aside, I've simply got to tell you about my delightful little journey here. As always, I had to arrive by train! Don’t you agree it's such a wonderfully romantic way to travel? The rhythmic sway of the carriage, the quaint passing scenery - simply a beautiful inspiration to your creative soul, don’t you agree? The train station in Paris is positively buzzing! Such a whirlwind of people! All sorts of stylish hats! It's a kaleidoscope of sartorial joy! It just inspires you, you know.
Now, I'm going to go ahead and try and make the world a brighter place, by getting all my lovely tutu-loving friends to follow my favourite hashtag – #PinkTutu! You might think this sounds frivolous, but I have a belief that everything is just more delightful in pink, darling!
Join me next Tuesday, my lovely, for another thrilling voyage through the wonder of ballet tutus. I’ve just had word from a little birdie that I will be on my way to see a sensational performance in the magnificent Teatro alla Scala. A theatre that literally overflows with grandeur! The very mention makes my toes want to tap and my heart want to dance! It promises to be a spectacular affair and I can't wait to share it with you.
Until then, my loves, remember that no matter what life throws your way, keep dancing and twirling and twirling until you sparkle!
Your Pink Tutu Princess,
Emma.
