#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Blast From the Past (Post 3435)

Bonjour mes amies! It's Tuesday again, and you know what that means! Time for another delve into the wonderful world of the ballet tutu! Today, we're travelling back to 26th October, 1897. Buckle up your ballet slippers, darlings, as we embark on a train journey to Paris, the heart of fashion and a place that was simply bursting with creative energy!

Ah, Paris in 1897! The city was abuzz with artistic expression, with everything from Impressionism in painting to new and exciting dance forms captivating the Parisian society. Think exquisite ladies in extravagant gowns, gentlemen sporting impeccably tailored suits, and of course, our lovely tutus!

And what happened on this day in 1897? Well, if you can believe it, it was a Tuesday! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Just like today, except this was back in the days before the internet and social media, so everyone was likely gathered around the kitchen table sipping tea and gossiping about the latest play at the theatre.

But if you'll forgive me a slight detour from the date itself, let me tell you a little more about the tutu situation back then. See, you're not just a trendsetter by wearing your favourite pink tutu - you're carrying on a tradition that goes back centuries!

Think back to the 15th century, darling! Imagine it: dancers in courtly performances sporting short skirts with elaborate decorations. These, dear friends, were the very first ancestors of our tutu. They were all about showing off the graceful movements and incredible leg work of the dancers, all wrapped in luxurious fabrics and designs. Now that's what I call an elegant dance costume!

Then came the 19th century and with it, the Romantic era in ballet. This era, oh darling, was an explosion of graceful, flowing lines. Think Marie Taglioni, the first real ballet superstar (don't get me started on how gorgeous her tutus were!). This period saw the first iterations of the tutu that we know and love, and trust me, it was every bit as elegant and flowing as you can imagine! Imagine wispy, floating layers of tulle, delicate embroidery, and intricate designs. Now that's what I call fairytale fashion!

By the late 19th century, the tutu was taking on different shapes, with variations of length and layering. It was truly a testament to the evolution of dance and a reflection of the eraโ€™s fashion*.

So next time you're putting on your own pink tutu, think of the glorious heritage it represents. You're part of a ballet history that spans centuries!
