#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through History - 1908-08-04!
Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood time-travelling tutu enthusiast, back with another peek into the wonderful world of ballet history. Welcome to post number 3997, a brand new adventure on www.pink-tutu.com. As always, I'm just popping in from my little jaunt to the past, ready to share a delightful tidbit from ballet's captivating past. It's #TutuTuesday, so let's slip on our most glamorous pink tutus and take a trip together!
Today, I’ve hopped on a luxurious train and am settling into my cabin - imagine, a whole cabin to myself! Just imagine, my darlings, all that space for my pink tulle - and to my surprise, we even have a lovely mirror on the wall, ideal for a quick twirl (one must make the most of any opportunity to feel the soft tulle caress one’s skin!)
I’m in the UK, of course, and a rather lovely spot to be precise! Today is 4th August 1908 and the mood feels quite joyous, as it’s a Bank Holiday. A delightful opportunity for an impromptu picnic and leisurely afternoon in a gorgeous garden – and to think that we’re on the verge of a spectacular show. Tonight I’m off to watch a performance by one of the most beloved ballerinas of the time – Anna Pavlova!
Imagine a performance where ballerinas pirouette in tutus that resemble fluffy, frothy clouds! Yes, my dears, tutus are reaching the peak of their flouncy splendour. Long, multi-layered tutus with a little help from stiffening agents create a shape so perfect that I’ve seen ladies mimic that very look with their hats. Hats, my darlings, you heard me! It seems, the fascination with the tutu isn't limited to just our lovely dancing girls; it's a whole fashion phenomenon!
This evening I’m in a flurry of excitement. Anna Pavlova is legendary! The press has called her "an embodiment of beauty" with an uncanny grace – just think of it, darling – an embodiment of beauty in a glorious, ethereal tutu! I bet the pink would be perfectly matched to my current fancy!
If you think I’m getting a tad carried away, consider this. Back in this era, even men in ballet adopted this delicate look. Yes, imagine men with tulle on their legs! There was quite a fascination with the ethereal. I'm certain there will be much excitement over my outfit.
Tonight, as I head to the theatre, the atmosphere feels magical – I have to keep reminding myself to be discreet. A 1908 London theatre must have some lovely backstage to explore, so keep your fingers crossed – I’ll share more with you next week, and yes, there might just be some very important clues as to what Anna Pavlova might be wearing!
Remember to check back here on Tuesday for my latest musings. Stay splendid! And always remember… it’s okay to twirl in public… it’s encouraged, really! Just wear a tutu, darlings. It’s all a little more magical that way.
Love, Emma x
